My Thoughts on Top 50 Best Pro Wrestlers Named by Powerslam Magazine

Justin WatryDec 23, 2011

Every year, Power Slam Magazine names their top 50 best wrestlers of the year. The list spans over the entire landscape of the business. From WWE to TNA to ROH to overseas to indies, everything is covered on this annual countdown.

Here are the Top 10, ranked by Power Slam Magazine:

1. Hiroshi Tanahashi
2. Randy Orton
3. Davey Richards
4. Prince Devitt
5. Shingo Takagi
6. Christian
7. Kurt Angle
8. C.M. Punk
9. Kota Ibush
10. Takashi Sugiura

Honestly, I can't comment on the names I have never seen. That wouldn't be right. Thus, I can only focus on the men I have seen perform through the past 12 months.

Randy Orton ranked second is perfect. I am going back and forth on him being number one in my list (him or Mark Henry). Thus, I have zero problem with his position.

Christian coming in at number six is a little bit of a stretch, but I am fine with it. He had the best year of his career. The second half of the year though did hurt him.

I like Kurt Angle at number seven. He is one of the few brights spot in TNA, and he proves it year in and year out. CM Punk is also great in the number eight slot. His beginning six months can't be forgotten in this 2011 campaign. Great second half. Bland first half!

Here are the next top ranked, by Power Slam:

11. KENTA
12. Go Shiozaki
13. Pac
14. Akira Tozawa
15. Hirooki Goto
16. Eddie Edwards
17. BxB Hulk
18. Tetsuya Naito
19. AJ Styles
20. Shinsuke Nakamura

The only name I can comment on here is AJ Styles. He had his usual year. It was fine, but it just never interests me. He is great in the ring, and that is it. I will say that I have read nothing but great things about the others!

Here are Power Slam's next ten ranked for 2011:

21. Masaaki Mochizuki
22. Bobby Roode
23. Rey Mysterio
24. Kenny Omega
25. Sheamus
26. Antonio Cesaro
27. CIMA
28. Katsuhiko Nakajima
29. Masato Yoshino
30. Chris Hero

Bobby Roode had a breakout 2011. Nobody is going to deny that. My only fear is if it will last and how TNA will fail to capitalize on it. They have yet to make one "real star," and I doubt it starts now.

Rey Mysterio is also in line with what I thought of his year. He had a good first half. His summer was great, but an injury has sidelined him August. Get well Rey!

Finally, I think Sheamus should be ranked higher. Maybe at number ten? Maybe fifteen? Somewhere in that range would seem fitting. His beginning of the year was rough, but his face turn is going to pay off great in the next year or so.

The next ranked by Power Slam:

31. Dragon Kid
32. Jay Briscoe
33. Ricochet
34. Mark Briscoe
35. Kevin Steen
36. Yuji Nagata
37. James Storm
38. Dolph Ziggler
39. Daniel Bryan
40. El Generico

I love James Storm at this spot right now. He also had a huge year. Whether you love TNA or not, you can't deny the talent of James Storm. My concern is the same as Roode. They wrestle on Impact, not Raw or Smackdown.

I think Dolph Ziggler should be a little higher. Not by much. Again, he had a great second half, but that does not wash away a bland first half. The same goes for Daniel Bryan. His first half of 2011 was very forgettable. His second half? Same thing, but with more focus on his quest to the World Title!

The final names by Power Slam Magazine:

41. Alberto Del Rio
42. Ryusuke Taguchi
43. Austin Aries
44. Jeff Jarrett
45. Kofi Kingston
46. Bully Ray
47. Christopher Daniels
48. The Miz
49. John Morrison
50. Kenny King

I am a fan of Del Rio. He may not be getting over with live crowd very much, but he has talent. Austin Aries is another bright spot for TNA. Too bad he is in their "cruiserweight division!" He is worthy of more.

Jeff Jarrett does nothing for me. Never has. Never will. It is 2011, and I think it is time for some to realize that.

Kofi had his big chance in 2009 and blew it. He will get another opportunity, just not for awhile!

Bully Ray fits into this same category as Jarrett, except he is still trying to make a splash (like JBL in 2004). He has transformed himself, gotten in shape, and he has been an actual "heel" in this business. Something many others can try to do...

Daniels does not do much for me. Sorry, but he doesn't. He made yet another return to TNA, and it has gone the same as his other returns: nowhere. The Miz should be ranked higher, much higher. The man has "it," and he is not going anywhere but up!

John Morrison even being on this list is funny to me, when Triple H (short run), Undertaker (one match), John Cena, R-Truth, and plenty others are not even mentioned.

What do you folks think of the list? Let me know...
