Fantasy Basketball Sleepers: Sneaky Picks to Dominate Your Season

Tim DanielsDec 22, 2011

Although fantasy basketball isn't as popular as its football counterpart, it's still widely enjoyed by fans. With just three days until the regular season begins, drafts have begun in full force.

To help you select the best team possible, here are three sleepers that will pay off big time.

Jose Calderon: Toronto Raptors

Duren to Explore Sign-and-Trade

Calderon was one of the top point guards in fantasy three seasons ago, when he averaged 13 points and nine assists to go along with shooting free throws at a 98-percent clip.

He hasn't been able to match that success, though, which has led many owners to sour on the Raptors guard.

That makes him a terrific buy-low candidate.

Toronto head coach Dwane Casey recently gave Calderon a vote of confidence as the team's starting point guard. As long as Calderon continues to get consistent minutes, his numbers should return to more useful levels.

Projection: 12 PPG 9 APG (will also help shooting percentages)

O.J. Mayo: Memphis Grizzlies

After being one of last season's biggest disappointments, Mayo has been the subject of trade rumors ever since the lockout was lifted. As for now he remains in Memphis and should be able to have a bounce-back season following a strong playoff showing.

The biggest obstacle for him last year was minutes. He dropped to 26 per game after averaging 38 in his first two seasons.

Mayo has worked hard on his defense, so he's less of a liability at that end of the floor, which should make him more reliable for fantasy owners again.

Projection: 16 PPG and a good source of three-pointers

Carl Landry: New Orleans Hornets

David West's departure should open up more minutes for Landry, who averaged 18 points and seven rebounds when he got extended playing time with the Sacramento Kings in 2009-10. That's a pretty high ceiling for a late-round flier.

The frontcourt rotation in New Orleans is still a bit murky, so proceed with a little bit of caution.

However, if he's still there when it comes time to draft your bench, pounce on him. Should the minutes end up working out in his favor, he'll far exceed expectations.

Somebody needs to step up without West and Chris Paul, and it could very well be Landry.

Projection: 15 PPG 6 RPG
