Miami Heat Rumors: Signing Gilbert Arenas Wouldn't Be a Desperate Signing
Acquiring former NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas wouldn’t excite too many Miami Heat fans. It’s a major possibility though.
If the Heat were to grab Arenas it wouldn’t be a desperate move. We have heard the plethora of reasons why Arenas wouldn’t work in Miami, but there is potential of him being able to help LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and the Miami Heat.
Arenas is known for shooting the rock. Imagine the open opportunities camping outside the three-point line with James' and Wade’s ability to penetrate and find open shooters.
They say that your overall game may go away, but there is one aspect of everyone’s game that always stays with aging players, and that’s shooting the ball. If you can shoot the rock, that will stay with you forever.
Go down to a YMCA and see how many of those guys can shoot the ball. Results may vary.
We are talking about a guy who averaged 25.5 points in 2004-05, 29.3 in 2005-06 and 28.4 in 2006-07. He doesn’t forget how to score.
He won’t return to his All-Star form, but that doesn’t mean he can’t produce. Even though Arenas is a 10-year NBA veteran, he is still only 29 years old.
Arenas’ form with the championship contending Orlando Magic last season was a disaster. He only shot 34 percent from the floor for eight points per contest.
Sometimes being placed with fantastic players like Wade and James can resurrect careers. It’s almost like players feel they need to produce at a high level to garner respect from the veterans. Maybe Arenas will fit in that category if he was on the Heat roster.
If the price is right, which it will be seeing how much he has struggled in recent years, it would be worth giving him an opportunity. What’s the worst that could happen? He could struggle? If he does, then he is gone.
It’s simple.
Everyone loves to point out how it wouldn’t work, which they could be correct, but is the reward bigger than the risk? I believe so.
The worst case scenario would be Arenas playing 10-15 games and shooting 30 percent from the floor for about five-to-eight points per game.
The best case scenario would be Arenas playing 10-20 minutes a night, connecting on 40-42 percent from the floor and scoring 10-15 points per game.
If the best case scenario were to happen, then it would open the door even more for James and Wade to penetrate, especially late in games, because help defenders would be forced to stay with Arenas on the perimeter.
Another sneaky statistic that Arenas carries is his ability to find the open man. He has dished out 5.4 assists per game in his career.
He’s a talented player, that’s no secret. It’s whether or not he can relocate his game enough to produce for the Heat. I think the potential is there—the risk is low compared to the reward, and maybe he will be motivated more than ever before. Remember: there is a reason why he wore No. 0 for all those years—to prove the doubters wrong. He is known for being able to succeed when others don’t believe he can.
Acquiring Arenas wouldn’t be a desperate move but, instead, it has more potential than downfall.
