WWE Opinion: Why We Need to See Cody Rhodes vs. Dolph Ziggler

Drake OzDec 22, 2011

On last week’s episode of Monday Night Raw, we saw four of the biggest building blocks for the WWE’s future all compete in one match.

It was Zack Ryder vs. Dolph Ziggler vs. Daniel Bryan vs. Cody Rhodes in a match to determine the Slammy Award winner for “Trending Star of the Year.” But realistically speaking, it was the WWE’s way of saying, “Hey, here are four guys who are going to be really big deals in 2012.”

And indeed they are.

Ryder is now the United States Champion, and Bryan is officially the World Heavyweight Champion. Oddly enough, though, I think it’s the other two competitors in that Fatal 4-Way who have the best chances at becoming consistent main-eventers in the WWE.

I’m talking, of course, about Dolph Ziggler and Cody Rhodes.

During that great match on Raw, we saw Ziggler and Rhodes prove why they are the top two candidates to be the WWE’s “next big things in 2012.” What was surprising, however, was the way that the WWE clearly teased some tension between those two a couple of times throughout the match.

When I was watching Ziggler and Rhodes go at it, I didn’t think to myself, “Oh, they’re just two heels who can’t get along because their egos are too big.” No, I thought, “Ziggler vs. Rhodes would be an unbelievable feud to see.”

I realize that Ziggler and Rhodes are obviously two up-and-coming heels who fit their roles so well that neither will likely be turning face in the near future, but we need to see these two in a singles feud as soon as possible.

Why? Well, quite simply, it’s because—at least in my book—Rhodes and Ziggler are the two most complete WWE stars who have never been given a legitimate shot at staying in the main event scene.

They’ve both had their moments—such as Ziggler’s match with Edge at the Royal Rumble or Rhodes’ feud with Randy Orton—but neither has stayed there for longer than a month or two. That needs to change because, outside of someone like CM Punk, you don’t get any better than Ziggler or Rhodes.

Both of these superstars have great looks—Ziggler with his bleached blonde hair and tanned skin and Rhodes with his “Dashing” good looks and chiseled physique. When you simply look at them, they clearly stand out.

But when you give them a microphone, they shine even more. Rhodes definitely has the leg up in this category, as he’s proved throughout 2011 to be one of the most unique and consistently good mic workers the WWE has. Ziggler, who once struggled on the mic, has really been in the zone lately and has turned what was a once a weakness into an actual strength.

He and Rhodes can now talk the talk, but can they walk the walk? You’re damn right they can.

There are very few young WWE stars who can rival Ziggler and Rhodes in the ring. I would argue that Ziggler is a top-three overall wrestler in the company (along with Punk and Bryan, and slightly ahead of Orton) while Rhodes really isn’t far behind. Especially when you consider that these guys are very young in terms of pro wrestling, it’s amazing to see how well they perform night in and night out.

On their own, Ziggler and Rhodes are two of the brightest superstars the WWE has seen in years—complete packages who don’t come around all that often.

Now, just imagine what they’d be able to accomplish if they got in the ring together.

It would be too brash, cocky superstars who can do anything and everything you ask for from two professional wrestlers feuding with each other to prove who is the best young star in all of the WWE.

And though some things have to change for Ziggler vs. Rhodes to go down, I have no doubt that their amazing all-around skills would make this rivalry a phenomenal sight to see.
