Chicago Bulls vs Indiana Pacers: Good, Bad, Ugly & Bottom Line

Brian MaziqueDec 20, 2011

Oh my God!!! Bulls fans had to have forgotten what it was like to have a real shooting guard. In only his first preseason game, Richard Hamilton showed Bulls fans a little taste of what will be an impressive starting lineup.

The Bulls win 93-85 to complete the preseason with a 2-0 record.

Check out the Good, Bad, Ugly & The Bottom Line from the Bulls final preseason game.

Good: Field Goal Percentage Comparison

1 of 4

The Bulls shot 51 percent from the field and held the Pacers to 37 percent shooting. The offense ran like a fine oiled machine, especially in the first half. The defense continued to close down the middle. Joakim Noah looked especially sharp and energetic, blocking five shots in 37 minutes of action.

The Bulls showed some nice variations in their half-court sets in the first half. There was one set where Luol Deng went into the post against Danny Granger. That is something that could help the Bulls immensely.

Richard Hamilton's speed, energy and savvy was an instant boost to the Bulls offense. The Bulls were fundamentally sound on both ends for most of the game.

Bad: The Bench Scoring

2 of 4

The Bench Mob continued their tight defense, but when the Pacers made runs, it was against the second unit. They consistently got stops, but couldn't score on the offensive end of the floor.

No matter how well you defend, you have to convert. The Bulls still need a bench scorer, a player off the bench that could help put distance between opponents would be ideal. This would allow the team to take advantage of the defensive stops.

Don't be fooled by the 25 points off the bench, much of that came in the second half, when a bit of the structure broke down.

The Bulls bench players were a combined -37 for the game.

Ugly: Daren Collison's Shooting Night

3 of 4

Collison may just end up replaced in the starting lineup by George Hill if this continues into the regular season. Collison shot 1-for-7 from the field with six points and five assists.

Bottom Line: Balance & Unselfishness

4 of 4

Derrick Rose played like the pure point guard his detractors say he isn't. Rose had 12 points, nine assists and he only took nine shots. Why? Because the Bulls had balance, a wing weapon and energy.

Don't discount the development of the Bulls new offensive looks as well. There was far more movement on the perimeter and a lot of back cuts to the hoop. A lot of this was made possible with Hamilton's presence.

Hamilton had 13 points on 6-of-12 shooting. He scored a bucket in the post, as well as a handful of slashes to the hoop in transition.

The Bulls had five players in double figures. Carlos Boozer lead the Bulls with 24 points, he played well offensively, but he still had some defensive lapses. Tyler Hansbrough ate the Bulls for lunch, but it wasn't all on Boozer. He victimized everybody, but the team still held the Pacers under 90 points.

All five players don't have to be All-Defensive team caliber defenders, especially when they score 24 points and grab seven rebounds.

Jimmy Butler played less than a minute at the end of the first half, so we only have his nice performance in the initial preseason game to go on.

The depth and cohesiveness was the best aspect of the game, and the Bulls look to be as ready as any team for the lockout shortened season.
