NFL Playoff Scenarios: Jets vs Texans and First-Round Games We Don't Want to See

Tim KeeneyDec 20, 2011

Here's a look at three potential first-round NFL playoff matchups that wouldn't be too fun to watch.

New York Jets vs. Houston Texans

This one reminds me a little of what the BCS National Championship will look like.

Both of these teams have very good defenses, like to rely on the running game and have shoddy quarterback play.

Still, a T.J. Yates vs. Mark Sanchez matchup in the playoffs? Ugh. No thank you. You'll likely see some good, hard-nosed football, and some people like that, but with these two inconsistent teams, that just doesn't interest me.

As it stands, Houston holds the No. 3 seed and New York holds the No. 6 spot, so this matchup is set to play out. Hopefully something changes.

Detroit Lions vs. Dallas Cowboys

If the Jets-Texans matchup serves as a solid-but-boring football game, this matchup would be the exact opposite.

Exciting, but bad football.

Both teams have a ton of talent and would provide plenty of storylines, but are there two more inconsistent teams?

Nope.

The Lions started the year with five straight wins, but have been largely mediocre (4-5) ever since. Matthew Stafford-to-Calvin Johnson is as fun of a duo to watch as anyone, but a lack of running game and an inconsistent defense really hurt Detroit.

On the other side of the ball, you've got Dallas. The Cowboys are capable of looking like a Super Bowl contender one week and then a lottery team the next. You just don't know which team will show up, and you don't know when Tony Romo will blow his next fourth-quarter lead.

Granted, Week 4's matchup between these two teams was very exciting, but it stemmed from some bad fourth-quarter football. The rematch could just as easily contain a lot more ugly football.

New Orleans Saints vs. Any Team

As it stands, the Saints are an impressive 11-3, but if San Francisco wins out, then New Orleans will finish with the No. 3 seed and no first-round bye.

With the way New Orleans is currently playing, they are not the type of team that should be in the wild-card round. They are too good.

Drew Brees is going to absolutely torch any NFC No. 6 seed. It won't even be fair.

This might be fun for Saints fans to watch, but any other fan will likely get bored. As it currently stands, Detroit is projected to play New Orleans, and that would mean a rematch of the Saints' 31-17 beatdown in Week 13.

Atlanta could potentially drop to that spot, but that would mean the third matchup between those teams this year. I could think of more enticing games.
