NBA Free Agents 2011: Baron Davis Gives New York Knicks Much-Needed Depth
The New York Knicks took another step toward achieving their goal of winning a title when they signed veteran point guard Baron Davis.
Howard Beck covers the Knicks for the New York Times and he was the first to tweet the news of the team's newest addition.
Davis isn't healthy right now, but expectations are that he'll be ready in eight to 10 weeks. When he's able to go, the Knicks will have a solid point guard group that will benefit them in postseason play.
This team has too much talent to miss out on the playoffs and they're going to need Davis' experience at the end of the season.
Toney Douglas and Mike Bibby alone weren't going to be enough for New York to truly succeed, but Davis gives them more talent to work with.
The Knicks have been extremely active in this short offseason, doing everything they can to make their roster better. When Davis became available, they jumped at the chance to get him.
Of course, Davis had plenty of options to choose from, but he chose less money in order to play with a strong team. By taking the veteran minimum, Davis left the Knicks more room to sign other veteran players, so it appears his head is in the right place.
This is a good news for a diva-like player. Beck talked to Davis and tweeted one of the reasons he chose to play for the Knicks.
Davis hasn't played postseason basketball since 2007, but he'll get the chance to do it again this year. He may not be the player he once was, but he's still got game and the Knicks won't regret having him in their lineup.
With so many great players in the starting rotation, Davis may have to cut down his shot selection, but he shouldn't have much trouble adapting.
If anything, while he is rehabbing his back Davis will get the chance to observe how the team works, which will help him once he's able to play.
Having been in the league for 12 years now, Davis is ready for a championship and he'll do his part to help the Knicks get there.
It's time to get serious and down to business and once Davis is back to full health, he'll be on a mission to help the Knicks every game.
While his numbers have been on a decline in recent years, getting the chance to play with Carmelo Anthony, Amar'e Stoudemire and Tyson Chandler will benefit Davis.
Averaging 16.5 points per game throughout his career, Davis is worth the risk of being signed and he will not disappoint for New York.
