Colt McCoy Injury: Updates on Browns QB's Week 16 Status and Fantasy Value

T.J. McaloonDec 19, 2011

Colt McCoy missed last week’s game for the Cleveland Browns against the Arizona Cardinals because of a concussion he suffered two weeks ago.

McCoy was crushed by a hit from Pittsburgh Steelers’ linebacker James Harrison that sent him off for a couple of plays in the waning minutes of the Browns loss to the Steelers.

McCoy’s concussion was so bad, that McCoy did not make the trip to Arizona with his teammates.

Update: Thursday, Dec. 22 at 3:07 p.m. ET by Eric Bowman

Mary Kay Cabot covers the Browns for the Cleveland Plain Dealer, and she tweeted the latest on McCoy.

This should come as no surprise to everyone. Backup QB Seneca Wallace had been preparing to start this week, and he certainly is in for a rough time against the Ravens

The fact that McCoy will miss his second game in a row with a concussion definitele makes you wonder why he went back into the game after James Harrison deliver the helmet-to-helmet hit.

The NFL has chosen not to punish the Browns for that, which doesn't sit well with some people.

McCoy wil rest up for another week, and hopefully be able to finish the season. Of course, the Browns don't have much to play for so if he isn't 100 percent there's no need to risk it.

Update: Tuesday, Dec. 20, 12:35 p.m. EST - Wes O'Donnell

Things aren't looking good for the Browns quarterback this week either. And let's face it, the Browns are a 4-10 team with nothing to play for but draft position. Unless the Browns are truly considering drafting or adding another quarterback to challenge or replace McCoy, he shouldn't be rushed back the field any time soon.

According to Browns beat writer Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, backup Seneca Wallace is expected to get the start this week:

This is a smart move by coach Shurmur and the Browns.

Sending McCoy back into the game against the Steelers was a seriously botched situation.

As for fantasy, if you were starting Colt McCoy I cannot even begin to imagine that you made the fantasy playoffs.

But as a small piece of advice to any with a Browns player on their roster: pretend like they don't exist anymore.

Initial Update

Without McCoy, the Browns lost in overtime to Arizona 20-17.

However, McCoy’s concussion symptoms are improving. According to Cleveland.com:

"

Browns quarterback Colt McCoy's concussion symptoms are improving, but his status for Saturday's game in Baltimore is still uncertain.

Coach Pat Shurmur said he'll decide whether to start McCoy or Seneca Wallace when McCoy is healthy.

"When Colt's okay, we'll talk about that,'' he said.

"

This week, the Browns travel to Baltimore to take on the Ravens who own the fifth-best passing defense in the NFL.

Even if Colt was healthy, you should do everything to stay away from starting McCoy against the Ravens defense.

In McCoy’s two career games against Baltimore, he has one touchdown to four interceptions. McCoy has never posted a quarterback rating higher than 63, while never passing for more than 200 yards.

Only start McCoy if: he’s playing, you are in an AFC only league, you play two quarterbacks in your starting lineup or have no one else to play.

Aside from that, you must do everything in your power to avoid playing the Browns quarterback this week against the Ravens.
