Green Bay Packers' Loss Could Make Drew Brees MVP

John NizinskiDec 18, 2011

The talks of the "perfect" season for the Green Bay Packers are all over after losing to the Chiefs on Sunday. If the Packers had gone 16 and 0, Rodgers would have been a lock for the NFL MVP.  With this loss, does Rodgers' MVP stock go down? With this loss, does Drew Brees' MVP chances go up?

The Saints are currently in second place in the NFC and being led by their quarterback. Drew Brees is on pace to break Dan Marino's single-season passing record. He currently sits at 4,780 yards with two games left to play.

Marino's record is 5,084 yards, which means Drew Brees would have to throw for at least 152 yards in each of the next two games to tie it; 152 yards is about 189 yards less than Brees' season average and 106 yards less than his season low of 258 yards in Week 9.

Aaron Rodgers is not second in the league when it comes to total passing yards, he is not third either. He is fourth and a fluke is the only way that Rodgers will be able to catch Brees this year.

The Packers no longer look invincible and Aaron Rodgers seems mortal now. He still however leads the league with 40 touchdown passes. Brees is second in the league with 37 touchdown passes.

It is very possible that Brees catches Rodgers in touchdown passes due to each team's remaining schedule. The Saints will face the Atlanta Falcons in Week 16 and the Panthers in Week 17. These team have given up a combined 41 touchdown passes this season.

The Packers are going up against the Lions and the Bears who have given up a combined 36 touchdown passes this season.

It is possible, since Drew Brees passed for five touchdown passes on Sunday, that Brees could throw seven or eight more touchdowns this season? Also, the Saints are going to try to come in second place in the NFC, which means Brees will get ample playing time.

Rodgers on the other hand, could see limited playing time because the Packers will want to keep him rested for the playoffs.  his means that Rodgers, after throwing for just one touchdown on Sunday, could only throw three or four total touchdown passes in the remaining two games, ultimately leading to the league lead for Brees, or at least a tie with Rodgers.

Drew Brees' 417 completions is almost 100 more completions than Aaron Rodgers this season. Meanwhile, Rodgers still has only thrown six interceptions and Brees has 11.

Drew Brees threw for 407 yards and five touchdowns on Sunday. Combine that with a mediocre performance by Aaron Rodgers and a Packers loss on Sunday, and Rodgers no longer is a lock for the MVP award.

Brees has thrown his hat in the ring and is a legitimate candidate this season.
