January Transfer News: 10 Most Overpriced Players in World Football
If transfer rumours are to be believed, clubs will be wasting huge money on stars such as Christian Eriksen, Iker Muniain and Neymar.
This January transfer window, many teams in world football will be looking make big signings, especially in Europe before UEFA's Financial Fair Play rules really come into effect.
But in doing so, a lot of them will also be paying well over the odds for certain talents. Here are the 10 most overpriced footballers said to be on the move.
Nicolas Gaitan
1 of 10Benfica star Nicolas Gaitain is reportedly set for a £29.3 million move to Manchester United.
Whilst the 23-year-old has been impressive, especially against United in the UEFA Champions League, he hasn't done enough to merit that kind of money, scoring just two goals in 23 matches this season. He has made 10 assists though.
True transfer value: £9.2 million
Christian Eriksen
2 of 10Burgeoning Ajax, Denmark and world football superstar Christian Eriksen is reportedly a £20 million target for Premier League rivals Manchester United and Manchester City.
The 19-year-old has shown brilliant promise at times, and has done quite well for a youngster with four goals and 11 assists in 24 matches this season, but could still do with a season or two before meriting a real big-money move.
True transfer value: £7.9 million
Neymar
3 of 1081 goals in 159 professional appearances for Santos and eight goals in 15 caps for Brazil makes 19-year-old Neymar possibly the closest challenger yet to Pele.
However, for all the talent Neymar has, he's not worth the £53 million that has reportedly made him available for transfer, a fee met by Real Madrid.
True transfer value: £26.5 million
Sandro Ranieri
4 of 10Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Sandro is reportedly a target for Liverpool and Manchester United.
Whilst the fees for his signature vary, the price tag whacked on him by Harry Redknapp is £35 million. Clearly, the £8 million signing from Internacional is not worth that much.
True transfer value: £9.7 million
Jack Rodwell
5 of 10Following the news about Darren Fletcher, Everton star Jack Rodwell has again been linked to Manchester United.
Considering Everton's financial plight and their need to raise funds to buy players in weaker areas of their squad, according to the reports a £20 million move could well be on the cards—which is a very inflated fee.
True transfer value: £11.5 million
Steven Nzonzi
6 of 10Blackburn Rovers midfielder Steven Nzonzi has recently been linked with Arsenal, Chelsea and Aston Villa, while Borussia Dortmund, Villarreal and Spartak Moscow have also been interested.
Whilst the 22-year-old is said to be available for £7 million, that's still 63 percent more than what he's really worth.
True transfer value: £4.4 million
Alejandro Faurlin
7 of 10Queens Park Rangers midfielder Alejandro Faurlin has gained plenty of admirers this season, specifically Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Inter Milan.
The 25-year-old is finally starting to show his true potential, but at 25 has only really become a good, top-flight player in the middle of his career, so is probably not worth anywhere near his £11 million price tag.
True transfer value: £2.6 million
Moussa Sow
8 of 10Arsenal signed Gervinho from Lille OSC and also chased their rising star Eden Hazard. Now reports say they, along with Newcastle United, want their striker Moussa Sow, for a fee of no less than £15 million.
The 25-year-old was the Ligue 1 top scorer last season with 25 goals, but he's only scored six this season from 16 matches. Not exactly big-money form.
True transfer value: £9.7 million
Wilfried Zaha
9 of 10Newcastle United are reportedly set to make a £10 million move for Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha.
Which is quite ludicrous, seen as the 19-year-old has only scored two goals and made three assists in 21 league matches this season—in the Championship, England second-tier.
True transfer value: £650,000
Iker Muniain
10 of 10Manchester United and Chelsea are reportedly set to battle it out for 19-year-old Athletic Bilbao star Iker Muniain—for £38 million.
That's his release clause, which both Premier League giants could supposedly meet, along with Real Madrid apparently as part of their 'Operation 2014.'
Muniain is certainly very talented, and already ridiculously experienced seen as he's made over 110 professional appearances since making his debut for the Bilbao reserves in the 2008/09 season.
However, he's definitely not £38 million talented—i.e. Sergio Aguero level—just yet.
True transfer value: £8.8 million
