WWE: 4 Changes That Would Help Alberto Del Rio Become a Main Event Star

Shalaj LawaniaDec 18, 2011

Alberto Del Rio definitely ranks among the Top 10 when it comes to in-ring ability in the current WWE roster.

Sadly, we live in a world of sports entertainment, and his lack of activity on Twitter and lack of originality have contributed to his downfall. Whether or not it was in his "destiny," only Mr. Del Rio has the answer to that.

Another championship run isn't likely for a few months now, which means this is the perfect time to rebuild the star into someone credible. It'll be a while before Ricardo Rodriguez wets himself in excitement over announcing the WWE Champion into the ring.

But then again, I might be proven wrong.

Here are four things that will make Alberto Del Rio interesting again.

Entrance

1 of 5

Let's start with the moment he gets on television: his entrance.

It's annoying, lengthy and a JBL rip-off. I don't mind watching shiny automobiles being driven to the ring in every show, because it's something different from the common walk-down-the-ramp entrances almost all stars have.

But what I'm really irked with is the amount of time he takes to get the entrance done. First, his car slowly rolls in, and he takes his time to get out and look at the crowd. Then he walks onto the ramp and does a little snobbish pose. Then he slowly walks down the ramp and into the ring.

I got bored writing that.

Add in the initial tuneless honking, and you have a channel-switching inclination—something common with the likes of Kevin Nash.

I have no problem with the Mexican aristocratic music, and the pyro is really cool... but the cars need to hurry up and the honking needs to stop.

Or make him ride Harley Davidsons right to the ring—saving his rich man character and our interest.

Ring Announcer Remains Announcer

I have to say: Ricardo Rodriguez is like a male Vickie Guerrero—he's an awesome heat magnet. I think I can safely say he gets more heat than Rio himself.

I like his character, but I don't like his interferences. Making someone interfere in a victory is—in my opinion—the height of laziness on behalf of the WWE Creative (unless the interference really builds up to something else (like Rock and Cena at WM 27).

You're talking about a guy who has won the biggest Royal Rumble, main-evented and won the Money In The Bank in one year, and you see him relying on his announcer to pull of victories.

It really doesn't put him off as a credible threat.

They had RR and the Awesome Truth interfere in his match with Super Cena so that he could finally retain.

I thought heels were supposed to come off as a threat?

Finisher

Hear me out on this one. Give him a solid finisher—along with his submission move. I know he comes off as a submission specialist, but it doesn't look the least bit dangerous. If you ask me, it looks like ADR is desperate to move the opponent's arm while the opponent flails around more than Dolph Ziggler does on an average move.

Either give him a finisher or make the Cross Armbreaker look a bit more threatening. To all those veterans who'll put their smart ass hats on for this one and say it's a perilous move and would leave me hospitalized if ever done on me properly—I'll agree with you.

But it doesn't sell on TV, or maybe ADR doesn't sell it well enough and that doesn't bode well for a main event superstar.

As I mentioned in a previous article, a quick finisher (maybe even a super kick), is a great way to add more excitement to matches. This goes for Daniel Bryan too.

Gimmick

4 of 5

This is where I expect a lot of criticism and probably a lot of hate. Meh, better than nothing.

It's common knowledge that ADR's gimmick has gotten pretty stale. One thing I've always wanted in Alberto (maybe because of his style of speaking and general mannerisms), is for him to adopt a comic heel role.

I really think Alberto can make us chuckle, while being a solid heel (something R-Truth was shaping up to be). Add in Ricardo Rodriguez with his smug face and greasy locks, and you have quality entertainment.

I say this because ADR will never sound and look like a Triple H or Undertaker. He doesn't have a husky voice or a really big body. He can make use of his accent (and the small snippets he jabbers in Spanish), along with his quirky mannerisms. Ricardo can carry on with his slave-like posture.

Either that, or turn Alberto Del Rio face. His heel persona is just falling flat.

But you already know that.

Conclusion

I have great faith in ADR's in-ring ability. It's just these features that have resulted in his downfall, and I wouldn't like to see him do a John Morrison anytime soon.

His match with CM Punk, among many, really went on to show the talent he has in the ring. It was unfortunate that it was overshadowed by The Rock and CM Punk's victory, but he did help put on an amazing main event.

That was my opinion, let's hear yours.
