Bulls Rumors: Chicago Doesn't Need Dwight Howard to Win Title
The Chicago Bulls reportedly want in on the Dwight Howard bidding, but they don't need the league's best center to win the title this season.
The Bulls could trump any other offer for Howard and a D12-DRose combination would be unstoppable. However, Chicago is ready to win right now and they don't need to make any major moves.
They are already the best defensive team in the league. Last year they were first in defensive efficiency (points allowed per 100 possessions), first in opponents' effective field goal percentage and second in points allowed per game.
They were also the second best rebounding team in the league, snatching 44.2 boards per game.
Basically, they are already dominant in the areas where Howard excels. His presence would be nice, but it isn't necessary.
Where the Bulls need help is on the offensive end, particularly on the perimeter.
They didn't lose to Miami in the Eastern Conference Finals because of poor defense or rebounding. They lost because nobody on the roster could provide consistent scoring from the wings.
The Bulls addressed that need by signing veteran 2-guard Richard Hamilton. Now, they have no major weaknesses.
Joakim Noah, Omer Asik and Taj Gibson are elite interior defenders.
Carlos Boozer was heavily criticized during the playoffs, but he's still good for 17 and 9 every night.
Luol Deng is the quintessential do-everything small forward.
And Hamilton will space the floor, drawing attention and defenders away from Rose.
You can't blame the Bulls for trying to get Howard. He's the best center on the planet and it's not even close.
But with the pieces they already have, Superman isn't needed in Chicago.
