Chicago Blackhawks: How Would Teemu Selanne Look in the Indian Head Sweater?

Jon FromiDec 17, 2011

The Chicago Blackhawks are looking for an offensive force on their top-six. Teemu Selanne could be looking for a winner with which to finish out his career.

Is there any way these two forces align before the end of the season?

The Blackhawks handed the Anaheim Ducks a 4-1 defeat in the United Center. Selanne provided the only offense in his team's losing effort. Of his 10 goals on the season, three have come against the 'Hawks.

It's no secret that Chicago has the cap space to make significant additions to their roster before the trade deadline. The Blackhawks have used Andrew Brunette and Daniel Carcillo on the top two lines with varying degrees of success.

Carcillo has injected some grit into the mix when he's skated alongside Patrick Kane, but his ultimate fate is that of a fourth line regular. Brunette still has a knack to find space, but it's apparent that a wing with some more scoring punch could come in handy as the playoffs begin to loom.

Enter Selanne, who even at 41 could be a force in an Indian head sweater. Selanne's $4 million salary could be absorbed by the 'Hawks and leave them a bit of cash to sure up another spot on the roster.

There is little doubt that Chicago could find a place on a scoring line and on the power play for a future Hall of Famer who is still capable of banging in 25 to 30 goals. Picking up Selanne would be a real feather in GM Stan Bowman's cap.

Realistically, this is a pipe dream at best. Selanne hasn't indicated that he's unhappy with the Ducks and management seems bent on him retiring with Anaheim when he finally does decide to hang up his skates.

Selanne would have to desire another run at a Stanley Cup enough to leave what is quickly becoming a hopeless situation in Anaheim this season. Then Bowman would have to pony up a package that would entice Bob Murray to part with Selanne.

The problem lies more with the availability of Selanne than having the pieces ready to swing a deal. There's plenty of talent in the organization that could be used to pick up a difference maker. It's just a matter of offering the right names.

I'd say right now the chances aren't good that Anaheim would deal Selanne. It sure is fun to think about, though, isn't it?
