WWE TLC 2011: Will Triple H vs. Kevin Nash Be One of the Worst Matches Ever?

Drake OzDec 16, 2011

Kevin Nash returned to the WWE at SummerSlam with a bang, attacking CM Punk and costing him the WWE Championship.

But what started out as an interesting storyline involving Nash, Punk and Triple H quickly became one that we wish would have never happened.

Though Nash is a legend in his own right and has an undeniable place in wrestling history, he just hasn’t connected with the fans of today’s generation, most of which have no idea who he even is. His return was supposed to be a big deal, but everything that’s happened since he’s come back has been a complete and utter flop.

Nash was kinda sorta feuding with Punk, and that went nowhere. Then, he was off of TV for a while before returning and picking up his feud with Triple H.

Now, here we are four months after Nash came back, and all we’ve really gotten out of him is one squash match against Santino Marella. The rest of the time he’s spent cutting boring promos and struggling as he tries to get into the ring.

And all this “build” and TV time was used for what? For a match with Triple H at WWE TLC that no one cares about.

But, wait, it’s not just any match. It’s a Sledgehammer Ladder Match.

Good Lord, what a stupid idea for a match, one that I think could make Triple H vs. Kevin Nash at TLC one of the worst matches ever.

The concept of every ladder match I’ve witnessed is for someone to grab a briefcase, some sort of contract or a title that’s hanging above the ring, not to grab a weapon when the freaking ring and ringside area is already full of weapons to begin with.

As if the concept of this match wasn’t dumb enough, the WWE decided to use it in a bout between a 42-year-old who has torn both of his quads and a 52-year-old who makes walking look harder than solving a calculus problem. If the over/under on how long it takes Nash or Triple H to climb up the ladder is five minutes, I’m undoubtedly taking the over.

It’s going to be like watching a baby trying to take his first steps. In the back of our minds, we’re all going to cringe and wonder if either guy—but more specifically, Nash—is one step away from catastrophe.

Now, there have been a lot of atrocious matches throughout WWE history, and I’ve already ranked my top 15.  But we might have to make room for Triple H vs. Nash’s bout at TLC.

I may kid around about Triple H’s torn quads, but especially after seeing what he did with The Undertaker at WrestleMania 27, I’m really not worried about him holding his own here.

But Kevin Nash? Eh, not so much.

I think this bout could be at least watchable if it was something like a No Holds Barred match that didn’t rely on staying in the ring or on climbing up a ladder. But this is the same Nash who the Wrestling Observer Newsletter named the “Worst Wrestler” in both 1999 and 2000, and he’s trying to compete in a ladder match 12 years after the fact.

Nash was never a great wrestler to begin with, and he’s about 15 years past his prime now. So, can you just imagine how hard it’s going to be to watch him on Sunday?

Look, I have nothing against Nash and can appreciate what he did for WCW and pro wrestling in the mid-1990s, but the problem with professional wrestlers is that many of them hold on for too long. And this is a prime example of that.

Nash looks like he’s in phenomenal shape for someone his age, and he looks like he can deliver a great match in the ring. But if looks were everything, then Mason Ryan would be the best wrestler on the planet.

Of course, that isn’t the case.

I just can’t see Nash’s bout with Triple H being anything more than an abysmal failure, given Nash's limitations in the ring, his age and the ridiculous "Sledgehammer Ladder" stipulation.

While The Game will keep it from being the worst match in WWE history, he won’t prevent it from being one of the worst matches we’ve ever seen.
