Lakers Rumors: Baron Davis to Los Angeles Ideal for Both Parties
Baron Davis has been waived, according to the amnesty rules. According to the Los Angeles Times, the Lakers will be monitoring his status. That's the smart thing for the Lakers to do and it's also the best potential landing spot for Davis.
Why is he the best fit for the Lakers? Because they clearly need a point guard. Derek Fisher managed to survive in the triangle, but they aren't going to be running that anymore, and apart from the triangle, Fisher doesn't have much to offer any more.
Steve Blake is probably a better option, but it's hard to see Blake as the solution to navigating through the postseason, either.
Just from a playmaking and passing perspective, Davis is in a different league from Blake, and on a different planet form Fisher. As far as players that are obtainable for the veteran's minimum, no one comes close to Davis. He's not Chris Paul, but he's a heck of a lot better than anything anyone else has to offer.
This also helps the Lakers in that it gives them another player who can take over the game other than Kobe Bryant. Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol established they aren't going to do so last postseason.
For Davis, it makes a lot of sense too. He'd be stepping into the best chance to win a ring. With Davis running the point, the Lakers would become the best team in LA again, and they'd have a real chance at winning the West, which will be a far easier task now than it has been in the past, and for the first time in recent memory, an easier path than winning the East.
He would be able to do so without having to assume the leadership role he's been reticent to take in the locker room. With the NBA's most prestigious senior statesman, Bryant, on the team, Davis could just defer leadership.
Davis and the Lakers, the Lakers and Davis—it's a paring waiting to happen, if, and when, his back gets better.
