WWE TLC 2011: 5 Reasons Brutal PPV Goes Against PG Rating
The Tables Ladders and Chairs pay-per-view has a lot of brutal moments from its history. The matches are built around brutal stipulations that go back to the days of hardcore wrestling. This is what the WWE have been trying to move away from for the past five or so years.
It makes you wonder why the WWE pushes this PPV, even if they want to appeal more to kids? If the WWE wants to clean up their image by pushing "good guys" like John Cena down their viewers throats, then why showcase matches that see him burying someone underneath a pile of chairs?
This PPV is fun to watch, but goes against everything the WWE has been pushing for in the PG Era.
No. 1 It Promotes Usage of Extreme Violence
1 of 5The PG Era of the WWE has seen the company move away from the hardcore style of match. They want to have more families come out to their shows, while getting the next wave of WWE fans hooked to their product.
However, a TLC match goes against everything they're building toward. These matches are more for the adult crowd, not for kids.
No. 2 It Puts Superstars in Situations That Go Against Their Clean Image
2 of 5John Cena is the face of the PG Era of the new WWE. He is everything that the company wants to tell their young fan base to be like. Cena promotes rising above hate and being the type of person who is loyal.
However, putting him in a match that has him burying his opponent underneath a pile of chairs for the finish goes against his image. It promotes a bad image for kids, while turning a blind eye to his PG character.
No. 3 It Has a High Chance of Blood Being Shown
3 of 5The WWE has gone to great lengths to not show any type of blood on their programs. If a superstar is busted open on RAW or SmackDown, they will stop the match to stop the bleeding. In these type of matches, it has a high chance of a superstar getting busted open during the match.
With the WWE against blood being shed, are we going to see every match getting stopped because a superstar is busted open?
No. 4 It Sends a Bad Message Towards Children
4 of 5The PG Rating is big on trying to eliminate kids from replicating what they see on TV. Having a full PPV dedicated to their superstars using house hold items to beat up their opponents.
The hardcore era spawned a bunch of young adults and kids to start up their own hardcore backyard wrestling federations. It resulted in a lot of people doing stunts they saw with chairs, tables and ladders as amateurs, not professionals.
No. 5 They Would Not Be Able to Get Away with This Match on TV
5 of 5The TLC match at one time could be on RAW or SmackDown. However, now that the WWE has gone full-blown PG, they would not allow it to be on free television.
Their advertisers would be upset, the USA Network would throw a fit and it would make a lot of parents at home question if they should allow their children to watch their program. This match is built for a PPV, where they can get away with being a little more hardcore.
However, if the WWE thinks this match would destroy their PG rating then they must be right.
