NFL Week 14: 10 Stats That Nobody Predicted
With just Monday Night Football to come, the National Football League is done for another week, and this week—like every other—left us with our jaws on the floor.
We had Tim Tebow.
We had Aaron Rodgers.
We had Eli Manning.
We had comeback games, injuries to key players, teams clinching the division and teams tying the division. We had it all this week.
And if you missed the action this week, you've got two real options.
You could sit down and watch every game back-to-back for the next 24 hours, or you could spend five minutes and read this article to catch up on all the stats and facts that nobody expected.
10. Comeback Central
1 of 10You could probably summarize the weekend with that one word: comeback. Don't believe me?
Atlanta came back from 16 points down to beat the Panthers by eight.
Jacksonville was down 14-0 and scored 41 unanswered points against Tampa Bay.
Houston scored in the final seconds to win by a point after trailing by 13.
Arizona somehow beat the 49ers by two after they were down by 12.
Tim Tebow did his thing, bringing the Broncos back from 10-0 down to win in overtime 13-10 in their third OT game of the season.
But, all that was overshadowed by Eli Manning and the New York Giants, who—on the road against the Dallas Cowboys—scored two touchdowns in the final three minutes to win by three and tie the division.
Simply incredible comebacks this week.
9. Tennessee Titans and Their Matching Score Lines
2 of 10Not since the 1932 Chicago Bears had a team had three straight games with the same score line.
Enter the 2011 Tennessee Titans.
In Week 11, they lost 23-17 to Atlanta.
In Week 12, they won 23-17 over Tampa Bay.
Week 13 saw them win 23-17 over the Buffalo Bills.
And in Week 14 against the New Orleans Saints, they almost became the first team in history to have four straight games with the same score line.
Tennessee 17, New Orleans 22.
So close, yet so far.
8. Maurice Jones-Drew Runs into Jaguars History
3 of 10With Fred Jackson and Matt Forte out, in addition to the ongoing injury to Adrian Peterson, Maurice Jones-Drew may well finish with the most rushing yards for the season.
In the meantime, he racked up four touchdowns against Tampa Bay tonight, taking his career touchdown tally to 74—the highest in Jaguars history.
7. Aaron Rodgers: Plain and Simple
4 of 10He probably shouldn't come in at No. 7 on this list due to his 13-0 start and the fact his name is pretty much already engraved on the MVP trophy.
Aaron Rodgers led the Packers to 31-0 at halftime and 46-16 at the end of regulation, as he tied Brett Favre's single-season-touchdown-passing record with 39.
And with three games still to come, I think the record is all his.
6. Atlanta's Big-Time Comeback
5 of 10Cam Newton looked set to be stealing the spotlight at home as he put the Panthers up by 16 points at halftime against the Atlanta Falcons.
But, Matt Ryan showed true class as he led the Falcons back to victory, making it only the second time in Falcons history they have won after trailing by 16 points or more at halftime on the road.
5. Who's the Weak Division Now?
6 of 10While most divisional races are done and dusted, some still remain wide open—none more so than the AFC West.
Going into this week, Denver and Oakland were tied at 7-5 for the divisional lead, but both were held scoreless in their opening halves.
Green Bay went into halftime up 31-0 against Oakland, and Denver went in 0-0 against the Bears.
Both teams then won the second half, though, as Denver won by three, and Oakland only lost by 30.
Only 30.
4. The Pack Rolls on for Another Week
7 of 10Another week, another win for the green-and-gold machine as they move another step closer to the perfect season.
At 13-0, the Packers have already broken their single-season record for total points, as they sit on 466 for the year.
With Kansas City up next week and the way Aaron Rodgers is playing, who knows what number they'll finish on?
3. Tim Tebow Does It Again
8 of 10It's almost unfair putting him on this list because it is titled "10 Stats that Nobody Predicted." Well, everyone probably predicted a Tebow fourth-quarter comeback.
I don't know how he does it.
For the first three quarters against the Bears, Tebow was 3 of 16 for 45 yards with an interception, and his team had scored no points.
Fourth quarter and overtime? Just 18 of 24, 191 yards, a touchdown and the win.
He's a freak, that guy.
2. Houston Clinches the AFC South
9 of 10Even before Peyton Manning was injured, many were pointing to the Houston Texans to win the division. They still had to win it, however, which tonight, they did.
The remarkable point is that they've done it without their starting quarterback as well as his replacement. They've done it on the arm of T.J. Yates, who threw a final-second touchdown to defeat the Cincinnati Bengals today.
They're not going to win the Super Bowl with Yates, but for a third-string quarterback, he has shown his class and deserves all the recognition and praise that he gets.
1. Ice, Ice Baby
10 of 10Dan Bailey has been great in his rookie year as the kicker for the Dallas Cowboys, landing five game-tying-to-force-overtime or game-winning field goals already this year.
He's just struggling with the icing lately.
Last week, it was his own coach who called a timeout just before he made the field goal. On his second go, he missed and handed the win to the Arizona Cardinals.
Everyone wrote it off as the coach's fault.
So, when the New York Giants were up by three with six seconds to go, and Bailey was about to send the game into overtime, Tom Coughlin called a timeout just before Dan Bailey kicked the field goal.
On the second go, the kick was knocked down, and the New York Giants walked away with a huge victory.
I don't know what it is—whether it's nerves, something physical or purely psychological—but for two straight weeks, Dan "Iceman" Bailey has been iced out. And if the Dallas Cowboys want to win the close ones, he needs to figure out a way to overcome it.
Because it doesn't take long for something to stick.
Like being known as the "Iceman."
