NBA Trade Rumors: Will O.J. Mayo Finally Be Dealt to Indiana Pacers?

Mike B.Dec 11, 2011

The Indiana Pacers made a nice move by signing free agent forward David West to a two-year, $20 million deal.

The former New Orleans Hornets All-Star should fit in nicely at the starting power forward spot in Indy and help the Pacers reach the postseason for the second consecutive season.

West, who averaged a tad under 19 points per game last season, should also take the scoring load off of the Pacers' top player, Danny Granger.

Another player who could help Granger in the scoring department is current Memphis Grizzlies guard O.J. Mayo. According to ESPN, Indiana is attempting to acquire the former USC Trojan in a sign-and-trade deal that would ship free agent Josh McRoberts to Memphis.

This, however, isn't the first time that the Pacers and Grizzlies have discussed a Mayo-McRoberts swap. Back at the trade deadline last season, the two teams agreed to a deal that would have sent Mayo to Indiana in exchange for McRoberts and a first-round draft pick.

The deal fell apart, though, as it barely missed the deadline, which brought disappointment to Indiana hoops fans.

Will Pacers president Larry Bird finally manage to bring Mayo to Indianapolis? If so, the 6'4" Mayo would surely be a nice pickup.

Mayo only put up 11.3 points per game last season in Memphis, but that's only because he played the majority of his games off the bench.

As a full-time starter, he averaged 18.5 ppg his rookie year (2008-09) and then 17.5 the following season. In addition, Mayo knocked down a combined 281 three-pointers during his first two seasons in the league.

The addition of Mayo wouldn't quite transform the Pacers into a title contender like the Dallas Mavericks, Miami Heat or Chicago Bulls, but he would help the team become one of the deepest in the league.

Mayo would join Granger, West, Roy Hibbert and Darren Collison in the starting five, and the bench would include the likes of Paul George, George Hill, Tyler Hansbrough and Jeff Foster.

Bird made a smart choice by signing West and hopefully he can find a way to land Mayo as well.
