UFC 140 Results: Frank Mir vs Brock Lesnar III Breakdown
Frank Mir and Brock Lesnar are mortal enemies who are currently tied in their series of fights at 1-1.
Why does this matter?
Because Mir's victory over Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira took place amidst rumors about Alistair Overeem being out of his UFC 141 fight against Brock Lesnar.
Who would replace Overeem? None other than Frank Mir.
What would a third fight between the two men look like? Read on and find out!
Striking: Frank Mir
1 of 6Frank Mir has an edge in every aspect of the striking game (except for maybe power).
Mir's striking has come a long way from when he was basically just a grappler, and he was even hurting Lesnar in their second fight until an ill-fated flying knee let Lesnar take Mir down and ultimately win the fight.
While Mir doesn't have the strongest chin in the world, Lesnar doesn't either; he's practically afraid of being hit.
Wrestling: Brock Lesnar
2 of 6Brock Lesnar is an NCAA Division-I champion, and Frank Mir isn't.
Lesnar didn't have a problem getting Mir to the mat in either of the two fights, so there's no reason to think he'd have a problem with it in a hypothetical third matchup.
Grappling: Even
3 of 6Frank Mir has better submission skills than Brock Lesnar, but Lesnar's wrestling base gives him better top control and positioning.
However, Mir's submissions are not to be discounted. Just because Lesnar has a solid base doesn't mean Mir can't submit him. It just makes it less likely.
Strength and Conditioning: Even
4 of 6Lesnar was once the stronger man but that doesn't seem to be so anymore.
Mir has put on a significant amount of muscle and his frame now looks huge. Lesnar, on the other hand, has likely lost some mass due to his second bout with diverticulitis.
In terms of conditioning, neither man has gassed out recently so their conditioning is roughly equal.
Training Camp: Frank Mir
5 of 6Frank Mir trains with Robert Drysdale, one of the greatest submission grapplers in the world.
Brock Lesnar trains at the DeathClutch gym with training partners who are basically worse versions of himself (John Madsen and Chris Tuchscherer).
Mir clearly has the advantage in this department.
Winner: Brock Lesnar by UD
6 of 6Despite a striking advantage and increased muscle mass, Mir likely won't be able to handle the smothering wrestling of Brock Lesnar.
Mir's newfound strength will only help him delay the inevitable: a unanimous decision loss.
