Aaron Rodgers Rewriting Record Brooks and Looking Cool in the Process

Zachary D. RymerDec 11, 2011

Sports fans tend to get carried away with players who are having the "greatest season ever." The reason fans tend to get carried with these players is because the media gets carried away with them.

But man oh man, I'll be damned if Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers isn't having the greatest season ever.

You've probably heard as much by now. At this point in the season, Rodgers is a lock to take home the league's MVP award, and his numbers are in record-threatening territory.

Coming into Sunday's action, Rodgers had over 3,800 yards passing, 37 touchdown passes, a 70.6 completion percentage and a QB rating 125.3.

Thanks to his tremendous first half against the Oakland Raiders, Rodgers is keeping it up. So far, he has 219 yards passing, two touchdowns and a QB rating of 99.1. His lone mistake, a second quarter interception, was not his fault.

The Packers only have three games left, but it's possible that Rodgers will break the single-season record for passing yards (5,084 by Dan Marino in 1984), touchdown passes (50 by Tom Brady in 2007), completion percentage (70.6 percent by Drew Brees in 2009) and QB rating (121.1 by Peyton Manning in 2004).

Oh, by the way, the Packers are 12-0 and well on their way to being 13-0.

So yeah, it's pretty much impossible to not get carried away when it comes to Rodgers. We've seen quarterbacks have great seasons, but we've never seen one have what can be deemed a truly perfect season. Rodgers is on pace to do just that.

When we look back on Rodgers' 2011 season many years from now, the numbers are going to speak for themselves. So will Green Bay's season, which right now, appears to be heading towards a second straight Super Bowl title.

The other thing that will stand out is how easy Rodgers made it all look.

You only need one hand to count how many times Rodgers has looked bad this season. His play has been that flawless. By comparison, you would need perhaps hundreds of hands to count how many times in which Rodgers has looked like the best quarterback in the NFL.

In these moments, Rodgers looks just as calculating as quarterbacks like Peyton Manning and Drew Brees, and just as fearless and clutch as Tom Brady. He is a master at work, one who is calm and collected, but above all, cool.

I don't care what team you owe your allegiance to, you can't help but root for Rodgers when he's doing his thing. Haters will hate anyway, but those of us with rational minds will realize that we are seeing something special when we watch Rodgers.

What is that, exactly?

Why, a quarterback having the greatest season ever, of course.
