Patriots vs. Redskins: Key Stats for Washington at the Half

Aliko CarterDec 11, 2011

In a matcup of what is clearly a good team vs. a struggling one, the Patriots take on the Redskins at FedEx Field. The Pats have been projected to demolish Washington today, but the "Any Given Sunday" rule is always in effect. The Skins have a had a few slip-ups, but have not let those mistakes deter their drive. Here are some key stats for them as they fight to take the Patriots at home:

1. Offensive Line Issues

The Redskins offensive line did not get off to a great start. They allowed what would have been a safety on the Redskins' second drive of the game had Rex Grossman not lost a fumble in the endzone. The result was seven points for New England. Washington can't be giving points away on their possessions if they want to stay in this game.

2. Time of Possession

You would think, based on the point totals, that New England and Washington would have similar time-of-possession numbers. And you'd be incorrect; the Skins have held the ball for the lion share of this game.

Washington has had some impressive drives early on, countering the Pats high-octane offense by taking their time marching into the New England red zone. They have amassed way more completions, first downs and total yardage. If they continue refusing to settle for three points, they'll stay right in this game.

3. Spreading the Wealth

Grossman has been throwing bombs today. He's getting the ball to all his receivers and has three passing completions of 18 yards or more, including a 51-yard throw to Donte' Stallworth. The Redskins pass offense has been on-point today and has kept them well in this game.

4. Brandon Banks' Versatility

The best play of the first half was a trick play in which Grossman handed off to diminutive wide receiver Brandon Banks, a southpaw, who threw a 49-yard touchdown pass to Santana Moss. As the Patriots didn't see it coming, Moss glided into the endzone. If Shanahan continues to get creative with the offense, the Pats defense could have their hands full in the second half.
