UFC on Fox 2: The Winner of Rashad Evans vs. Phil Davis Deserves a Title Shot

Kyle SymesDec 11, 2011

The main event in Chicago for the UFC on Fox 2 card features a pair of light heavyweights looking to insert themselves into a title shot against champion Jon Jones.

Dana White has already tabbed this as a title eliminator bout, but some fans are questioning the legitimacy of a Davis-Jones title bout.

Those questions should be put to rest if Davis emerges victorious.

"Mr. Wonderful" has beaten quite a few stars en route to his showdown with Evans. Fighters like Brian Stann, Alexander Gustafsson, Tim Boetsch and Rogerio Nogueira have all fallen against Davis.

Throughout his fights, Davis has shown an increase in ability with his striking and has added submissions to his already strong wrestling background.

Davis is a former Division I national champion at 197 pounds and has transitioned his wrestling credentials to MMA fairly well. His top control is excellent and he can threaten his opponent with submissions as well as punches.

If he were to beat Evans, he would've defeated the No. 2 ranked light heavyweight in the world and would have an undefeated record to help his credibility.

Nobody wants to see a "Shogun"-Jones rematch or a rematch against "Rampage."

Not that it's the only reason Davis should get a title shot, but he would literally win by default as Jones has destroyed all competition thrown his way.

On the flip side, if Evans were to win, the case for him matching up against Jones is easier to make than chocolate cake.

The two were supposed to be matched up against each other twice before, but both men have had to pull out of their fights due to injuries.

Although Jones is the clear top-ranked light heavyweight, Evans was at one point considered the best 205-pounder in the world too.

There's a saying in football that coaches use when a player gets injured and their backup performs well.

"You don't lose your starting spot due to injury."

While Jones has had the best year of any MMA fighter in history, his last two wins have felt hollow as the names on the event poster didn't read "Jones vs. Evans."

The two former training partners would headline an event that I believe could come close to that one million barrier the UFC can't get over.

Not because either man is established with the fans, they honestly hate both fairly equally, but because the pre-fight talk would surpass the hype generated by Evans-Jackson or even Sonnen-Silva.

The UFC will either have an easy time displaying their next challenger to Jones (Evans) or they may have a little tougher time (Davis), but either way, it will be hard for fans to not feel either man deserves their chance.
