UFC 140 Results: Frank Mir Becomes First Man to Submit and KO Nogueira

Dan HiergesellDec 11, 2011

After securing an arm-breaking (literally) submission Saturday night against Minotauro Nogueira at UFC 140, Frank Mir became the first man ever to submit the Brazilian jiu-jitsu legend.

What makes Mir's accomplishment even more impressive is the fact that he also became the first fighter to ever KO Nogueira when he belittled the boxer at UFC 92, back in 2008.

I think it's safe to say that Mir has Nogueira's number.

But beyond our initial "Holy crap!"s and "Did you see that?"s, it's important to put this feat into MMA perspective.  Nogueira was, and still is, considered one of the best fighters of all time, offering world-class jiu-jitsu and some of the best heavyweight boxing around.  So how does a guy in Mir, who some still view as a non-threat for UFC gold, yet again lay the smackdown on an unexpecting "Big Nog"?

Honestly, who knows?  It could be a scenario where one fighter simply has his opponent figured out to a tee, in which he's able to beat him in a variety of ways.  Or it could be the fact that people have been overlooking Mir as a top-heavyweight for the majority of his career, or at least since his return to the UFC following his near-death motorcycle accident.

Whatever it is, regardless of the past and what people have thought of Mir's ability in the cage, now is the time to rectify those mistakes and pay tribute to a guy who's the only fighter ever to submit and KO a legend.  Because if there's a time to appreciate what Mir has done in his professional career, it's now.  You could even say this is his most important victory in the UFC to date.

Considering what Mir did to a guy that other fighters feared on the ground, acknowledging him as the best heavyweight submission expert around seems like the only fair thing do.  Heck, he may even be the best all-time, and that's only because he literally just beat the best.

So before you discredit Mir as a legitimate contender among the likes of Brock Lesnar, Alistair Overeem, Cain Velasquez and even the current heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos, take a step back and cherish the significance that took place this past Saturday.

All in all, Mir undoubtedly cemented himself as a No. 1 contender and even a top 10 MMA heavyweight of all time.
