UFC 140 Results: 5 Fights to Get Lyoto Machida Back on Track

Jordy McElroyDec 11, 2011

There could only be one.

Unfortunately for "The Dragon" fans, that one wasn't Lyoto Machida on Saturday night at UFC 140 at Air Canada Centre in Toronto.

Jon Jones retained his light heavyweight title and continued his rise up the pound-for-pound ranks after submitting Machida with a brutal modified guillotine choke in the second round of their main event bout.

Despite losing the bout, Machida was the first fighter to actually test Jones. The former light heavyweight champion bested the young lion in the standup exchanges early out. It wasn't until Jones secured a takedown and opened up a nice gash on Machida's forehead when the tide began to turn.

As both fighters returned to their feet, Jones landed a solid left hand that floored the Brazilian. Jones was able to follow up with knees and lock in a guillotine that left Machida plastered motionless on the canvas.

While there is certainly no shame in losing to Jones, Machida is now 1-3 in his last four fights. It's an awkward position to be in, considering Machida obviously remains one of the top light heavyweights in the world.

Here are five potential bouts to get Machida back on track.

Vladimir Matyushenko

1 of 5

Wily MMA veteran Vladimir Matyushenko seems to always be a win away from breaking into the top-10 rankings of the light heavyweight division.

At 40 years of age, the window is slowly closing on the former IFL champion.

For Machida, this would be a good fight against a respectable light heavyweight, and for Matyushenko, this could serve as his last hurrah in an attempt to snag the biggest win of his professional career.

Stanislav Nedkov

2 of 5

Undefeated Bulgarian Stanislav Nedkov would be an interesting option as a comeback opponent for Machida.

While Nedkov lacks the pure efficiency of "The Karate Kid," he makes up for it with a stellar chin and jarring knockout power.

This bout would be a great way to either get Machida back on track or introduce the light heavyweight division's newest star.

Rich Franklin

3 of 5

Regardless of the opponent, former UFC middleweight champion Rich Franklin has never backed down from a fight.

There would be no greater challenge for "Ace" than taking a rematch with Machida, who stopped him in the first round in Japan back in December 2003.

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira

4 of 5

The likelihood of this bout going down is quite slim considering Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Machida are training partners and good friends.

While Machida is coming off a loss, Nogueira just broke a two-fight skid at UFC 140 with a win over UFC legend Tito Ortiz.

This would certainly be an interesting contrast in standup styles, pitting Machida's Karate base against Nogueira's traditional boxing background.

Forrest Griffin

5 of 5

This may not be a fight that particularly interests Forrest Griffin, but it definitely makes sense as a comeback bout for Machida.

While Griffin may not have the same enthusiasm about fighting anymore, he's still a widely respected top-10 light heavyweight.

This would be a great bout to put Machida back on track and maintain his relevancy in the 205-pound division.
