UFC 140 Main Card Results: Mir Takes Big Nog's Arm, Jones Chokes out Machida
The conclusion on UFC 140 is a mix of ups and downs inside the cage and a boisterous final atmosphere outside of it. 18,303 fans packed the Air Canada Center and there were many roars and groans to be had on the main card of the night.
The event started out to incredible disappointment for the home fans as local hero featherweight Mark Hominick was dropped and knocked out by "The Korean Zombie" Chan Sung Jung just 0:07 seconds into the fight. Hominick came out "amped up" and it admittedly cost him big time.
"I let my emotions get the best of me and didn't follow my game plan. I got a little too hyped up." Hominick said after the fight.
Next up was fellow Canadian Claude Patrick facing the wily, veteran Australian Brian Ebersole. The fight had its ups and downs and was very close to call. In the end, it was Ebersole who took the split decision from Patrick based on his ability to end up on top on most takedowns and scrambles.
The card was just starting to heat up when "The People's Champion" Tito Ortiz took the cage against Rogerio Nogueira. It didn't take long for L'il Nog to take command of the fight with his striking and he landed a vicious knee to the ribs and hurt Ortiz badly in the process. L'il Nog finished Ortiz with a series of punches at 3:15 of the first round.
"He caught me clean in the same spot Rashad did. He is the champ. I take my hat off to him. That body shot hurt me." Ortiz said.
The next fight was a very highly anticipated rematch between Frank Mir and Rodrigo Nogueira. It turned out to be the highlight, yet a gruesome one, and the story of the evening.
Both fighters came out punching but Big Nog landed most and then he stunned Mir with a right hand and dropped him to the canvas. Nog could not finish and Mir regained his wits enough to get into a position battle with Nog.
Mir came out on top using his superior strength and soon he had an arm on Big Nog. They rolled a couple times in a brilliant display of jiu jitsu from two masters, yet Mir only strengthened his hold. The position was perfect and the Kimura lock cinched yet Big Nog refused to acknowledge the danger and tap to Mir.
Mir stated in the post fight press conference (see video) that he had a feeling Nog would not tap so he "took a deep breath" and then that was when things got ugly.
Mir broke Big Nog's arm or at the very least dislocated something and you could clearly see it happen as it did. The crowd gasped and Nog was left down in the cage for quite some time so the medics could stabilize the arm.
In the main event of the evening, Jonny "Bones" Jones survived a rather challenging first round to go on to choke out Lyoto Machida and defend his light heavyweight title for the second time this year. Machida did hit Jones in the first, testing the champ a bit in the first round.
"I kept my composure during the first round," Jones said following the fight. "I didn't have too much strategy going into the fight except to perform at my best."
Jones took Machida down early in the second round and then sliced his forehead open with an elbow that temporarily stopped the fight. When it resumed, Jones got Machida on the cage and sunk in a standing guillotine. Machida went unconscious and dropped to the floor when Jones let the choke go.
