UFC 140 Fight Card: What Has to Go Right for a Tito Ortiz Win
Tito Ortiz has long been known as one of the most competitive and successful fighters to step inside the Octagon.
So it makes sense as to why the former UFC light heavyweight champion is confident heading into his bout against Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at UFC 140.
The two competitors were originally scheduled to face each other at UFC Fight Night 24 earlier this year before Ortiz had to withdraw. The idea of matching up Ortiz against Nogueira was simply to indicate which fighter still has the ability to remain competitive in the 205-pound division.
That theme isn't likely to change this time around.
Clearly Ortiz's best days are behind him but he still has the skills to compete with the Brazilian and possibly grind out the decision win.
Ortiz's boxing skills haven't always been great, but throughout his career he has improved on his technique and sharpened his skills to stay competitive on the feet. Ortiz shouldn't be hesitant to test his striking against Nogueira, however "Lil Nog" is one of the most accomplished boxers at 205 pounds, holding a gold medal at the 2006 South American Games.
It's evident that when facing against some of the division's elite strikers, Ortiz eventually wilts under pressure and is forced to utilize his wrestling and look to complete a takedown. It's unlikely he will out-strike Nogueira so he needs to implement his wrestling as early as possible to dictate the pace.
Despite having efficient submission skills, during his UFC tenure Nogueira has shown an inability to defend the takedown and display offense off of his back.
If Ortiz is able to utilize his wrestling skills early and consistently take Nogueira down, he will disrupt the Brazilian's timing and constantly keep him wary of the takedown, effectively neutralizing his striking and tiring him out.
Should Ortiz following his game plan accordingly, he will dominate the Brazilian and earn the victory.
