NBA Trade Rumors: Sensible Scenario Not There for Warriors to Move Stephen Curry
As the Warriors have gained traction in the Chris Paul trade rumors, the possibility of Stephen Curry being moved has risen to a significant degree.
A few possible scenarios were presented by Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News. Now, with the exception of the Paul scenario, everything he presented was just from him, and not any rumor that comes from the organization.
Still, while Kawakami was clear that this was nothing more than pure speculation on his part, he did lay out some interesting scenarios.
The basis of his argument is that he understands the fears of Warriors fans who wouldn't want to trade Curry for Paul, only to have Paul bolt the team after this season. Instead, he argues that they need to shop Curry to other teams that would have interest in Paul, since they know that Curry is valued by the Hornets.
It's an interesting argument, but there's really no need to move Curry at this point.
This is straight from Kawakami:
"If I’m the Warriors, I tell the Lakers that I can give them Curry (and the path to Paul). Wouldn’t that make Kobe Bryant happy?
But to do this, the Lakers would have to also take David Lee’s contract… and give me Andrew Bynum.
"
Is it possible that Kawakami is overvaluing Bynum? I know that Bynum has had some good seasons for the Lakers, but he's been horribly inconsistent and injury prone.
If the Warriors are going to move a player like Curry, they need to be getting more than a player like Bynum. It seems that this trade would only serve to help the Lakers get their hands on Paul. Considering they're divisional rivals, that move would be counter productive.
More from Kawakami:
"I don’t think Oklahoma City is in play for Paul, but the Thunder has some potential issues with Russell Westbrook.
Is he the right point guard to play long-term with Kevin Durant, especially with Westbrook coming up on a big payday?
"
He added:
"If I’m the Warriors, I think Westbrook might be a better fit alongside Monta Ellis… or just that Westbrook is simply a better player than Curry, straight up.
"
There are a few problems with that scenario. For one, the Thunder have gotten into trouble because Westbrook shot too much. Why exactly would Curry be any different? The best part of Curry's game has always been his shot.
And how is Westbrook a better for the Warriors than Curry? It doesn't make a lot of sense.
Kawakami is on the right track, but, only to a degree. The Warriors don't need to be shopping Curry. The rest of the league knows that he's a huge chip to get Paul. If they want Paul and feel Curry's the key to get him, let them come calling.
Until that happens and the right offer comes, the Warriors are best suited keeping Curry in their backcourt.
