Pride Before A Fall: An Obituary For TNA

Ron JohnsonDec 24, 2008

For the past two months, TNA has been the victim of a dying storyline. It's one of the final storylines that arguably led to the downfall of WCW. Here we are, seven years later, and guess what? The WCW returns in the worst way possible. Despite having more WWE Superstars on its roster than WCW Has-Beens, TNA has managed to survive up to this point.

But after the last few weeks of IMPACT, even I have found myself wondering if the company itself will make it to its Genesis Pay Per View on January 11th. The reason? The long winded overused storyline involving the Billionaires Club and the Young Guns. Don't remember that one?

That's because it didn't work the last time Vince Russo tried it. He and Eric Bischoff tried to use this storyline right before Hulk Hogan, Scott Hall and Kevin Nash were about to bail on the company.

That worthless storyline didn't work then...and it isn't going to work now.

I would like to write an obituary for TNA, but I don't have the energy to tell them that they're making the same mistake that WCW did. And that's the real reason why WCW fell victim to the Monday Night Wars.

I'm shocked that they didn't grab Eric Bischoff before he decided to join in on the farce of Hulk Hogan's nWo Resurrection on CMT. I'm surprised that they didn't try to keep several of its superstars from making the move to WWE (R-Truth, Gail Kim, Christian Cage). And let's be realistic: We all know that Cage is going back to the WWE because he knows that as long as guys like Sting, Angle and Nash are allowed to call their own shots, he'll never get a chance to be the man.

Sure, it was great seeing Samoa Joe and AJ Styles trying to step up, but it's clear where the direction of TNA is heading: South. South as in the fans will get tired of seeing the same broken record week after week. People will get tired of tuning to Spike to watch the same group of guys beating up everyone, and in the process, making the hole that TNA is digging for itself even bigger.

The reason that the WWE will survive is because they've finally gotten the point. They dubbed John Cena as RAW's World Heavyweight Champion, and they delivered Jeff Hardy the best Christmas Present Ever: WWE Championship!

In contrast, TNA thought it would be better for Sting to lead the company into the new year. They thought that having Booker T as Legends Champion and the band of imitation wannabe Cliq members running TNA into the ground was a good idea. Unfortunately, the only way it can truly survive is by changing the guard. It has to roll with the changes.

You claim to cross the line when in all honesty, you've done nothing more than fear the line. Despite having a checkered past, Jeff Hardy was given the chance to be Champion. Despite being on the shelf with an injury that even your great Kurt Angle would have stepped away for a year for, John Cena was given the chance to win over the RAW Crowd once again.

What is TNA doing to ensure its future? Its running around in circles kissing the ass of the men who claim that they should be honored as gods. So I'm curious about something: How long ago was it that these five stooges did something significantly good for the company?

Kurt Angle couldn't hack the new work schedule so he went to Florida and assumed that he was the biggest thing going. (Wrong Answer by the way) Kevin Nash couldn't perfect that golf game in Arizona so he decided to play backstage guru instead (How's that working grampa?). Sting couldn't find another gig mainly because he claims it was his principles (but it was his pride and his ego) until TNA was born and Sting was resurrected. Scott Steiner...no comment necessary. He knows he's nothing more than a sideshow act.

As for Booker T, he proved just how much of a coward he is by running from his mistakes in WWE instead of facing them head on.

Either way you look at it, TNA does not have the stamina to survive the entire new year. If they want to keep running around in circles, they can continue to do that. But if they want to survive to see the end of 2009, they might want to follow their own advice: Cross The Line, Already.

Remember TNA: Pride comes before a fall. And you've had six good years of pride...is it time for the fall to arrive?

Bear in mind that the WWE took out WCW mainly because WCW did the same thing over and over in the final stretch. In the end, not even the almighty Vince Russo and supposedly creative Eric Bischoff could save the mighty WCW from extinction. And I'm sorry to say it, but the same could be said about TNA.

Jeff Jarrett's firstborn could suffer the same fate as Ted Turner's billion dollar pet.
