WWE Summerslam 2000 Review: TLC Stole the Show on a Lackluster Night
WWE Summerslam has always had a great history of amazing shows. The edition in 2000 was not exactly an "amazing" show, but it was a good show.
The perfect word to describe the event would be disappointing. Such promise, with very little excitement by the end of the night! Here are my thoughts on the card.
Right to Censor vs. Too Cool and Rikishi
This was during a hot tag team era in the company, and this match definitely personified that. Each side did their jobs, and it was a fine match. Nothing worthy of a big event like Summerslam though!
X-Pac vs. Road Dogg
I remember this feud over a decade ago. I did not care then, and I still do not. Former tag team partners facing each other is always an easy story to tell, yet I felt no emotion here.
Val Venis and Trish Stratus vs. Eddie Guerrero and Chyna for the Intercontinental Title
What a mess! A tag match for one of the top titles? I am not a fan of overbooking like that, and it certainly doesn't help when these four did not match up well one bit. Chyna winning the title again is a whole other issue I do not wish to cover right now...
Tazz vs. Jerry Lawler
Again, this match was fine. However, I never felt much during their feud. Their match the following month at Unforgiven was much more eventful. Even worse, Lawler got the win with help from Jim Ross!
Shane McMahon vs. Steve Blackman for the Hardcore Title
This was a great hardcore match. I am glad the title is out of the company today, but it was fun to have around during the Attitude Era. This match was made by a few high-risk stunts, but the actual match from beginning to end was very nicely done.
Edge and Christian vs. Dudley Boyz vs. Hardy Boyz in a TLC match for the Tag Team Titles
This match made the entire night. Most fans have seen the highlight clips many times over the years, but it really had to be lived in that time frame. To watch these three teams have such a great match (and all walk out in one piece) was a sight to see!
I think a major factor was being in North Carolina (Hardy's home state), but that shouldn't take away from the crowd reactions during this 20 minute segment. On a night with many big time players, these six men (and Lita) stole the show.
Nobody was talking about the undercard. Few were talking about the upper card. However, everybody was talking about the epic first-ever TLC match. Edge and Christian may have won the match, but all bodies involved won much more.
Undertaker vs. Kane
Who even recalls this match? How many people can tell me the finish?
Exactly. This was yet another chapter in the Brothers of Destruction story, and it really was not needed. Kane was heel here, and not many people cared about this match.
It was all but forgotten about a few weeks later, and it was for the best. It felt thrown together, the build was bad, and the finish was even worse. A No Contest brawl? On a major event like Summerslam? No thank you!
The Rock vs. Kurt Angle vs. Triple H for the WWE Championship
Now we are talking...
This was the main event of the evening, and it was more then deserving of the top slot. At this point, Rock and Triple H have worn out their rivalry, so Angle was added in the middle.
Stephanie McMahon was also included here, and what we got was a giant cluster of a story line in the summer of 2000. I liked it, but with Angle knocked out for most of the match, we ended up with yet another Rock/Triple H battle.
I loved their matches as much as the next guy, but it was clearly time time to move on. Rocky picked up the win, but more attention was on Angle/Stephanie/Triple H. Not exactly the right focus to close a major show...
As you can see, the TLC match more than made up for a pretty lousy Summerslam. The year 2000 is often called the best year in WWE history. However, WrestleMania was extremely weak that year, as was Summerslam.
It makes you appreciate the first ever TLC match a lot more. Without it, you can only wonder what else this card would have featured. I know I will be looking forward to the WWE TLC show next month because of shows like this...
