10 of WCW's Worst Gimmicks/Moves of All Time

David LevinDec 8, 2011

It will go down in wrestling history as one of the greatest times in the business.

The battle between the WWF and WCW will forever be remembered as the "Monday Night Wars" and brought fans to their feet week after week with new and innovative ways to better the wrestling scene.

From these heated weekly battles, we saw the likes of DX, the nWo and the heel turn of Hulk Hogan. We also met great superstars like Goldberg, Chyna and The Giant, who later went on to become the Big Show in WWE.

But while WCW was able to kick Vince McMahon's ass for more than 80 weeks on television, Eric Bischoff and his cast of characters could not hold onto the top spot and eventually began to crumble with the changes being made in TBS, Time-Warner and the network.

Soon, the company that originally got its start from the NWA and Jim Crockett Promotions turned into very much a sideshow or circus act that played second fiddle to the McMahon empire.

Toward the end of WCW, there were horrible acts and angles written by Vince Russo and his band of writers that just made the entire wrestling scene sick to its stomach.

There were other gimmicks/moves that made us scratch our heads and think out loud even before the Monday Night Wars began. Some will be commented on in this list as well. When you really think about it, they are just as bad as some of the stuff that creative teams try to pull off today.

And we should probably expect to see more of them in the future with other wrestling promotions.

10. Making Everyone a Member of the NWO

1 of 10

Eric Bischoff and creative had something special when the "invasion" took place. Then it got out of hand.

The nWo became the "black and white" and the nWo became the "red and black."

You then saw the "Latino World Order" and other factions come out of the woodwork.

It just blew up and to be anything in the company, wrestlers like Sting and Lex Luger joined just to remain "cool."

9. David Flair Winning the United States Title

2 of 10

He had others jobbing for him essentially.

Flair knew nothing about wrestling at the time. He was lost and Dean Malenko and Chris Benoit were helping him cheat.

His daddy Ric was the dirtiest player in the game, but David may have been the dumbest at the time.

8. Vinnie Vegas

3 of 10

You will see Kevin Nash on this list twice.

The first, he plays a lounge act known as "Vinnie Vegas" and comes to the ring in a leisure-suit outfit.

It looked like it did not sit well with Nash, and it certainly did not sit well with the fans.

7. The Black Scorpion

4 of 10

This is one promo that could have been amazing.

Sting was being taunted by his past.

A disguised voice over the arena intercom told tales of his past like someone that knew him intimately was coming after him.

It was as great a concept as the Midnight Rider.

But no one wanted to play the part of the ghost from the past (which was really a disguised voice of Ole Anderson).

At first it was going to be Al Perez, a Gary Hart-guided wrestler. Then it was placed on Barry Windham, but he was wrestling for gold.

Finally, it came down to Ric Flair, and it was a good match, but the concept fizzled quickly.

6. The ICP Wrestles

5 of 10

This is where Eric Bischoff tried to use his connections in entertainment a little too much.

The Insane Clown Posse was a hot item at the time of the Monday Night Wars. And to heighten ratings, the Posse got in the ring a few times to wrestle.

It was indeed insane. I remember being in Florence, S.C., when I drove past a laundromat with the ICP bus was parked. I was writing for the entertainment magazine there at the time and asked one of the members if they enjoyed what they were doing outside the realm of their music.

He just laughed and said, "No, but the money is good."

5. The Great Oz

6 of 10

Again, it looks like the creative team got the best of Kevin Nash.

He is dressed in green and given the "Wizard of Oz" royal treatment.

Maybe that is why he is so pissed off these days. He is reliving his tormented moments on screen.

4. Glacier

7 of 10

For months, WCW pimped him as the next great thing. Flashy promos, big drama. And then nothing.

Glacier cooled off and melted in a very short time in WCW.

He wasn't worth the buildup and he certainly did not make the fans shake in their seats.

3. Letting "Stunning" Steve Austin Leave WCW

8 of 10

Ric Flair swears the worst thing WCW ever did was let Steve Austin walk.

Eric Bischoff was on the company's watch when this happened.

Austin (who had hair back then) was a tag champion and a United States Champion at the time.

He had a great look at one of the "Hollywood Blonds" with the late Brian Pillman. He also proved he was one of the better wrestlers in the company.

Why he was let go and not given an opportunity to win the world title still remains a mystery today.

2. Putting the WCW Championship on David Arquette

9 of 10

Ugh, this was REAL.

Arquette, pimping a wrestling movie he was in with some of the WCW superstars, won the WCW World Title.

It was just insane and had no real relevance to anything remotely right about wrestling.

Arquette dropped the title shortly thereafter.

1. Shaving Ric Flair's Hair

10 of 10

You don't tug on Superman's cape and you certainly don't shave Ric Flair's hair.

When Vince Russo came up with the idea of having a young David Flair in the ring to face his father, the stipulation was if David won, he could shave Ric's white mane.

You knew exactly how this was going to go from the start.

David won, Ric had his head shaved and with that I lost all respect for whatever sense of business there was in WCW.
