Bulls Rumors: Signing Vince Carter Would Be Irrelevant for Chicago Title Hopes
Do the Bulls need a shooting guard? On the surface, they do. But looks can be deceiving. In reality, the best man for that job is already on the Bulls' roster.
K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune speculated that the Bulls may be looking at Vince Carter, or Jason Richardson. Those are bigger names that would attract a nice buzz, but they wouldn't get the Bulls any further in the playoffs than they have already been.
When you've already been the the conference finals, there are only a few possible upgrades. Neither Richardson or Carter are the answer.
Johnson also speculated that the Bulls should move C.J. Watson to the starting shooting guard slot. In turn, they would sign T.J. Ford to come in and back up Derrick Rose.
Now we're talking. The bigger name in this mix is Ford, and we'll get to him momentarily. But read what Johnson said about Watson's ability to play shooting guard.
""Whenever asked about the dynamic, Watson said he enjoyed playing off the ball and pointed to his tenure paired with Monta Ellis with the Warriors, when they shared ball handling duties."
"
That sounds pretty good. After all, the Warriors back court is always fun to watch. The Bulls have a strong front court to help them get the wins that the Warriors don't. If Watson likes it and it works, then they need to go for it.
But the possibility of Ford is the real selling point. Rose needs some help. Given his style of play, he plays far too many minutes a game. That style combined with those minutes is not going to lead to any championships.
The Bulls bringing in a player to come in and take a few minutes per game away from Rose will lead to championships.
If they bring in Carter or Richardson, then Rose will be playing the same minutes now that he did last year when he ran out of gas in the Eastern Conference Finals.
In addition to that, Richardson will be 31 in January. Carter will be 35 in January. I don't trust either of their abilities to play at a high level through the playoffs.
Finding a quality backup for Rose is the better option. So, while C.J. Watson doesn't look like a better starting shooting guard than Vince Carter or Jason Richardson, that's the better option for the entire team. It's not close.
