Lions vs. Saints: 10 Predictions for This Good Ol' Fashion Shootout

Matt BowenDec 2, 2011

The Week 13 NFL matchup between the Detroit Lions and New Orleans Saints promises to be a good ol' fashion shootout.

Each team has the ability to score in bunches, and this week will be no different. Fans can expect a high-scoring affair with minimal defense.

The first team to fail to score may end up losing the game. This will be hands-down the most entertaining NFL game to watch during Week 13.

Saints' quarterback Drew Brees and Lions' quarterback Matthew Stafford are set for an all-out offensive onslaught as this game guarantees to reach break-neck speeds.

Fans can expect 1,000-plus yards of total offense as all eyes should be glued to this game.

Here are 10 predictions for his good ol' fashion shootout.

No. 10: There Will Be over 80 Points Scored

1 of 10

The Detroit Lions and New Orleans Saints have both scored 40-plus points on three occasions this season.

Fans shouldn't expect anything less in NFL Week 13.

Both teams are poor at stopping the run at have top-caliber quarterbacks behind center. This game will not be pleasant for the defensive-minded as these teams will combine for over 80 points.

In actuality, this game may take four hours to play because of all the touchdowns.

Fill your living room with snacks and prepare for the most entertaining NFL game this season.

No. 9: The Saints' Drew Brees Will Connect with at Least 8 Receivers

2 of 10

New Orleans Saints' quarterback Drew Brees is one of the best in the business at spreading the ball around, and the matchup against the Detroit Lions in Week 13 will be no different.

Brees has hooked up with at least eight receivers in all but three games this season.

For fantasy owners of Saints' receivers, this is frustrating. At the same time, this is great for Saints' fans because it keeps opposing defenses off balance.

Brees is one of the best at calling the shots from the line of scrimmage, and he'll do a fine job of keeping the Lions' defense guessing in Week 13. In doing so, he'll connect with at least eight receivers.

No. 8: Detroit Lions' Tight Ends Will Combine for 13 Catches

3 of 10

The Detroit Lions struggle with running the ball, and everybody knows it.

Head coach Jim Schwartz and offensive coordinator Scott Linehan have tried to suffice for that lack by calling plays to their tight ends.

Both Brandon Pettigrew and Tony Scheffler have made significant impacts on the Lions' offense this season. Pettigrew has 54 catches and three touchdowns while Scheffler has 16 catches and five touchdowns.

Both of these men are able-bodied beasts that can take on any NFL linebacker. At an average of 6'5", 260 lbs., these men can carry the load of a dump truck. The Lions now depend on these men more than ever as their playoff hopes are in jeopardy.

With the Lions decimated at the running back position, fans should expect to see at least 13 combined catches from Pettigrew and Scheffler against the New Orleans Saints in Week 13.

No. 7: Saints' Rookie Mark Ingram Will Have His 1st 100-Yard Game in the NFL

4 of 10

New Orleans Saints' rookie running back Mark Ingram has yet to eclipse the 100-yard mark in his young NFL career, but he'll do so against the Detroit Lions in Week 13.

The Detroit Lions will be missing Ndamukong Suh clogging up the middle against the Saints, which will make it easier for Ingram to earn 100-plus yards in the game.

The Lions have been terrible against the run all season long, and Ingram is no easy tasks.

Ingram's current career-high for rushing yards in a game is 91. With Saints' quarterback Drew Brees keeping the Lions' defense on their heels, Ingram should flourish.

No. 6: The Detroit Lions Will Attempt an Onside Kick

5 of 10

The Detroit Lions will find themselves down in the game against the New Orleans Saints and in desperation mode.

Not wanting to fall to 7-5 after a 5-0 start, Lions' head coach Jim Schwartz will dip into his bag of tricks and try to pull the rabbit out of the hat.

At some point, the Lions will attempt an onside kick.

Fans should expect this sooner than later, maybe even in the first half. The Lions need a win and will do anything to get one.

No. 5: Saints' Tight End Jimmy Graham Will Score 2 Touchdowns

6 of 10

The New Orleans Saints' hit the jackpot when they took a risk on young tight end Jimmy Graham.

Graham is a helluva athlete and has quickly become quarterback Drew Brees' favorite target.

At 6'6", 260 lbs., he's hard to miss on a football field. He leads the teams in receptions with 67 and also in touchdowns with eight. At one point this season, Graham had four consecutive 100-yard games, proving his potency.

Although he hasn't eclipsed the 100-yard mark in five games, fans should expect him to do so against the Detroit Lions in Week 13.

Fans should also pencil him in for two trips to the end zone.

No. 4: Lions' Wide Receiver Rashied Davis Will Tally 4 Tackles

7 of 10

The Detroit Lions are decimated with injuries right now.

They were bitten by the injury bug so badly on Thanksgiving against the Green Bay Packers that backup wide receiver Rashied Davis had to play on defense. During his time on the field, he made two tackles.

The Lions have multiple members of their secondary listed as injured heading into their game against the New Orleans Saints. Safety Louis Delmas will be out, while cornerbacks Chris Houston and Brandon McDonald are also maimed

This doesn't bode well for the Lions considering that the Saints have the No. 1 passing attack in the NFL.

With that said, Rashied Davis will see some action on the defensive side of the ball and record at least four tackles against the Saints.

No. 3: Lions' Quarterback Matthew Stafford Won't Throw an Interception

8 of 10

Detroit Lions' quarterback Matthew Stafford had a brilliant start to the season before stumbling of late.

Thanks to an injured finger on his throwing hand, Stafford has thrown nine interceptions in his last three games alone.

During that time, Stafford has been sporting a pair of gloves that have been cursed by many, accepted by few.

The gloves come off in Week 13 as Stafford looks to silence his naysayers. The Lions have a puncher's chance against the New Orleans Saints, and Stafford will be superb.

Fans can expect to put up 400-plus yards on the Saints defense while chalking up a goose egg in the interception column.

Week 13 is the week where people begin to believe in Stafford again.

No. 2: Lions' Receiver Calvin Johnson Will Score 3 Touchdowns

9 of 10

Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson is the best in the NFL at his position right now.

He already had 12 touchdowns on the season and add to his total against the New Orleans Saints in Week 13.

After getting off to a torrid pace, Johnson has been quieted of late. He only has three touchdown in the teams' last six games. This may be partly due to Lions' quarterback Matthew Stafford having an injured finger, but MegaTron is bound to snap his cold streak sooner than later.

Fans should expect Johnson to have a monster performance against the Saints, who allowed New York Giants' receiver Victor Cruz to earn 157 yards and two touchdowns in Week 12.

If Cruz can do it, Johnson is a sure thing.

Fans can expect nearly 200 yards and three scores for the man they call MegaTron.

No. 1: Saints' Quarterback Drew Brees Will Throw for over 500 Yards

10 of 10

Drew Brees is somewhat of a mythical creature on a football field. He's capable of putting up numbers that are straight out of a video game.

Brees will surpass his career-high 510 yards against the Detroit Lions in Week 13. The Lions are just too battered on defense to stop Brees and his high-powered offense.

The sky is the limit for Brees against the Lions as he'll have a monumental day.

Being the last game on Sunday, the entire country will get to witness Brees as he gets to pick apart the Lions' defense.

The NFL record for yards in a game is 554 set by Norm Van Brocklin in 1951, and Brees may just exceed that unthinkable number.

This is must-see TV—don't miss it.

Prediction: Saints 52, Lions 42
