Knicks Rumors: Grant Hill Interest Is an Embarrassing Sign of Desperation
The New York Knicks have star power, but they aren't quite up to speed with the heavy hitters in the East. They need to make a move in order to avoid being kicked around by the Miami Heat for the next half-decade, but pursuing 39-year-old Grant Hill shows just how desperate the Knicks are.
Newsday.com reports that the Knicks are amongst the teams being linked to Hill. The Knicks need to let the Los Angeles Lakers and Phoenix Suns battle it out for Hill and explore other avenues.
When Amar'e Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony came to New York, fans were thinking championship. They can't do it alone, but overvaluing Hill's veteran value isn't going to take the team to the next level.
This would have been a championship move in 1997—but it's not now.
Hill was a $3.2 million player who scored 13.2 points a game last year. He offers the Knicks nothing for the future, and the impact he would have on the team now wouldn't be worth the money they would need to shell out for the aging role player.
Let the Suns keep him in Phoenix. The injury-prone has-been can help a fringe playoff team like the Suns remain semi-relevant, but he doesn't have championship-caliber basketball in him right now.
He's a bad move for the present, and will be a non-factor in the future. It's no fault of his own, as the guy is pushing 40. His numbers are on a steady decline, and the Knicks shouldn't let the big name trick them into thinking Hill is a guy who can get them where they need to go.
This would be a huge step backwards, and the Knicks have far too much to work with to settle on Hill.
