Los Angeles Needs a New Champion and His Name Is Abner Mares
Los Angeles, like most major cities, is lacking the celebration and camaraderie of our NBA team, the prized Los Angeles Lakers. Our Dodgers are for the most part in the news only because we are in need of a billionaire new owner to bail us out of bankruptcy, and most Angelenos are on their hands and knees begging for a NFL franchise to return once and for all.
Ever since local LA boxing superstars like Oscar De La Hoya retired, LA has had quite a void of a major world title champion to rise up and represent the second most populated city in the U.S.
Right now we have only one major world title champion and his name is Abner Mares. Mares is defending his IBF/WBC Silver titles this Saturday when he is fighting former champion Joseph Agbeko for their highly anticipated rematch, which is taking place at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.
Mares is the real deal, fighting the top elite opposition back to back in Yonnhy Perez, Vic Darchinyan, and Joseph Agbeko, all former world title champions, in the Showtime network’s Bantamweight Tournament, winning the whole thing last August.
The undefeated Mexican-American champion was born in Guadalajara, Mexico and grew up in the tough gang infested neighborhoods of LA’s Hawaiian Gardens.
Abner has the total package: the skills, talent, good looks, great back story and street credibility to relate to a wide range of demographics of fans. Growing up in the LA gang culture and wearing his signature war bandanna around his mouth as he enters into the ring, all while now being a family man with a wife and two daughters whom he spends his free time being a dedicated loving father and role model.
Ever since my exclusive interview video with Abner Mares became a hit on YouTube, several of Abner’s fans from all walks of life, from cute Latinas from the south to middle-aged white executives and attorneys from the east coast, have all expressed to me how they are all big fans of Mares for overcoming so much in his life to working so hard to become a champion.
Some middle-aged attorneys from the Philadelphia area often express to me their admiration and respect for Mares and how they view him as a "good kid" who turned his life around and put in the hard work to deserve all of his current success. This one middle-aged attorney even promised that he would wear Abner's bandanna around his mouth to work on casual Friday should Abner win in his rematch this Saturday.
This is all the more reason why LA should come out and support our only current world title champion. We need to show support and solidarity for our champion. Much like our counterpart, the Bay Area comes together and supports their champions Andre Ward, Nonito Donaire and Robert Guerrero.
I spoke with Abner Mares today as he is just days away from the biggest fight of his life and he is training very hard between a fully stacked media schedule and he had the following statement in regards to his fight Saturday and to all of his fans here in LA:
"ABNER MARES: “Thank you so much for your support....and all I have to say is expect a great fight from me and believe me when I say you will get your money's worth."
"
So LA come out to the Honda Center this Saturday in Anaheim and support our champion, Abner Mares, as he takes on Joseph Agbeko once again.
Let’s show all the powers that be that we do come together in solidarity for our champions and we prefer to see our champions fight in our backyard verses having to drive and travel all the way to Las Vegas or even farther.
Tickets start off at only $25 with ringside tickets only at $150! You better take advantage of this deal for a ringside ticket to an Abner Mares fight for it will soon be multiple times this price!
