Stevie Johnson's Classless Celebration Proof He'll Never Be In NFL's Elite

Gary DavenportNov 27, 2011

As if the Buffalo Bills didn't have enough problems after dropping their fourth straight game by losing to the New York Jets 28-24 today, the reeling Bills may be without their top wide receiver for next week, as Stevie Johnson is likely staring at discipline from the league office after today's ill-advised touchdown celebration.

After reeling in a five-yard scoring strike from quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick in the second quarter, Johnson pantomimed shooting himself in the leg, an apparent dig at New York Jets wideout Plaxico Burress.

It recalls of course the much ballyhooed incident in which Burress accidentally shot himself in a New York nightclub and was subsequently sent to prison for carrying an unlicensed handgun.

The display earned Johnson an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, and given what a huge lover of free spirits National Football League commissioner Roger Goodell is, the fourth-year pro is likely looking at at least a hefty fine and quite possibly a suspension.

It's something the now 5-6 Bills can't afford if they're going to keep their rapidly fading playoff hopes alive.

Perhaps more importantly, Johnson dropped a pass on Buffalo's final drive that was the last nail in the Bills' proverbial coffin today. It brought to mind the "God Hates Me" game from last season in which Johnson dropped a game-winning touchdown catch in an overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Many wide receivers through the years have garnered reputations as prima donnas or hotheads, including some truly elite pass catchers such as Randy Moss, but between the dropped passes and the asinine dances, Stevie Johnson is quickly getting a rep as all style and no substance.

It's unlikely that anyone will be adding him to their list of premier receivers any time soon.
