NBA Rumors: Rashard Lewis Bad Solution to Lakers' Problems
The NBA lockout has made last season a little hard to remember. But it doesn't take a lot of research or memory to remember that the Mavericks swept the Lakers out of the playoffs.
That's certainly not the standard that's been set in Los Angeles.
Mike Bresnahan of the Los Angeles Times speculated on many moves that the the Lakers may make. One of the things he wrote was this:
"The Lakers also want a shooter and are monitoring whether forward Rashard Lewis (two years, $43.8 million remaining) gets waived by Washington.
"
Is this really the kind of move that the Lakers would make. I understand that they are financially strapped, but this is a stationary move, at best.
Let's look at the facts of the matter.
Lewis is 32 years old. Given their similar styles of play and builds, I would have to assume that this would be a guy to give Lamar Odom some rest. If they're looking for a guy to come in and spell Odom, wouldn't it make sense to look for a younger player?
In addition to that, Lewis' numbers are trending in a dramatically down direction.
Plus, look at what Bresnahan said. Is Lewis really the kind of shooter that the Lakers are after? It's not like he shoots at an astronomical level.
No, the Lakers need to find a way to get younger. If they don't do that, the playoff success will not be getting any better.
At the very nicest possible level, Lewis is just moving in place. At the worst, he's a huge step in the wrong direction.
They simply need to find a way to get younger, and clear some cap space. Lewis wouldn't accomplish either of those goals.
So, the Lakers are best suited to go in another direction in free agency. First of all, Lewis hasn't been released by Washington yet. But even if he is, this is a target that wouldn't help the Lakers enough to be worth it.
