NBA Trade Rumors: Why Chris Paul and the New York Knicks Are a Perfect Fit
Chris Paul would turn the Knicks into instant title contenders.
He's the league's premier point guard, and he would turn the New York's power duo of Carmelo Anthony and Amar'e Stoudamire into a power trio that rivals the Heat's "Big 3."
Offensive Firepower
Paul would bring a consistent scorer to the Knicks' backcourt. He can put the ball in the bucket in a myriad of ways.
Paul can hit threes. He shot 39 percent from distance last season. He can also blow by defenders on his way to the hoop for easy buckets.
Paul's Stats
Offensive Diversity
In an age when many point guards look to get their points first Paul is a throwback. He's still a classic pass-first player. This would be invaluable to the Knicks' offense. He averaged 9.8 assists per game last season.
He would create easy buckets for Stoudamire down low and open looks for Anthony. This would also allow Melo to spend less time with the ball in his hands and more time finding ways to get open.
Paul's presence on the court would make every Knick a better offensive player. He would ensure the shooters had open looks and the bigs get dunks.
Desire to Play Together
Throwing three huge egos together can always be tricky. All of these guys are used to be the primary option and dominating the team's offense.
There would have to be concessions made to that end. Quotes like the following indicate that these guys are willing to do that.
As the New York Daily News tells us Paul made a toast at Melo's wedding that Anthony, Stoudamire and he would form a "Big 3" in New York. This was several months before Anthony became a Knick.
This fall, the trio were on the same team in the South Florida All-Star Classic. After that game, Melo told reporters, quoted from the above linked article, "Do you think Knick fans liked that. I’m sure they did. I liked it."
These guys are clearly pulling for the chance to play together. That will make them eager to buy into the team concept, and reluctant to complain when things hit a rough patch.
Prediction
This move has a very high probability of happening. For many, it seems like a mere formality.
My guess is that it will happen via a sign and trade this season. The Hornets aren't going to want to watch Paul walk away for nothing.
Any trade is likely to involve Chauncey Billups who has a contract value just over $14 million this season, and that expires at the end of the season.
