Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao: Talks of a May 5 Fight Have Begun
Just when you thought the Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao fiasco couldn’t get any worse, well, guess what? Both camps have apparently been negotiating a possible May 5 showdown, the same date pencilled in by Mayweather’s manager Leonard Ellerbe a few weeks ago.
Pacquiao, who recently won a controversial points decision over Juan Manuel Marquez in their trilogy bout, was contemplating a fourth encounter with "Dinamita."
It turns out, however, that the fight isn’t a done deal, and I presume no contracts have been signed either.
So far so good.
The other great news, is that it was actually Pacquiao making his own play, and for once not his promoter Bob Arum.
Speaking to abs-cbnnews.com, this is what Pacquiao had to say about the proposed super-fight with Mayweather:
"Negotiations are ongoing for my fight with Mayweather, but nothing is final."
Pacquiao even had time to give a little dig to Mayweather, in regards to media speculation that Pacquiao’s lacklustre performance against Dinamita was a sign that he was more or less there for the taking, given Mayweather had trounced said fighter back in 2009 after a brief hiatus from the sport.
"Mayweather may be thinking, 'I can fight Pacquiao now because he had trouble against Marquez, and I was able to beat up Marquez.'"
In Pacquiao’s world, that’s fighting talk, and it’s about time.
Also, it’s great timing given Roger Mayweather’s recent verbal attack on Pacquiao for allegedly refusing to fight his nephew when a potential $100 million is at stake.
I’d like to call that hype.
With that said, Pacquiao must now be open to the subject of subscribing to Olympic-style drug testing (OSDT), as that was seen as one of the obstacles nixing the initial matchup.
Any news regarding the possibility of "Money" and "Pac-Man" eventually meeting in the four-cornered ring is good news indeed, however misleading it might seem.
Needless to say, this latest information should be maintained with a degree of skepticism, vis-à-vis both camps' recent history with regards to negotiations falling through.
Nevertheless, over the coming weeks we’ll garner more information as to whether the fight is progressive or not.
