LSU vs. Arkansas: Who Gets Title Shot If LSU, Arkansas and Bama All Have 1 Loss?

Randy ChambersNov 22, 2011

It's nearing the end of the college football regular season, and this is about the same time when fans' heads are about to explode.

Since there is no playoff to really determine who the better team is, we must guess and predict where computers and voters will place teams.

This year, it may come down to tiebreakers to determine who ends up in the BCS National Championship, as three teams from the SEC West are numbers 1-3 in the BCS rankings.

There are so many different scenarios that could take place, but let's try to break things down before you lose your mind.

Arkansas and LSU play a huge game this Friday, and that will help make things a little easier. If the Tigers end up winning and Alabama beats Auburn, we will likely see a rematch between Alabama and LSU.

That is still the case even if the Tigers go on and lose the SEC Championship Game against the Georgia Bulldogs.

But let's assume that Arkansas pulls off the major upset (according to Vegas odds) and beats LSU on Friday.

What happens then?

We would then have to go to SEC tiebreakers, and that's when things get a little interesting. The third-lowest team in the BCS rankings would automatically be eliminated. It would come down to the two highest-ranked teams.

If it's Alabama and Arkansas, the Crimson Tide would go to the SEC Championship Game because they beat the Razorbacks. If it happens to be LSU and Alabama, the Tigers would represent the SEC West because they beat the Crimson Tide in overtime. If the top two teams are Arkansas and LSU, of course the Razorbacks would go because they beat the Tigers.

Got it?

LSU would have their first loss of the season after surviving a very impressive and difficult schedule.

Even a close loss to the Razorbacks shouldn't knock them out of the top two spots—especially not lower than an Alabama team they beat at home. The Tigers should still be good even with a loss this weekend.

Alabama destroyed Arkansas early in the year, so even if the Razorbacks win this Friday, will they jump the Crimson Tide? It would be hard to believe that they would, and that would knock Arkansas out of any BCS possibility even if they won against LSU.

Basically, Arkansas fans need to hope that they beat LSU and Alabama somehow loses against Auburn this weekend in the Iron Bowl.

If both of those teams end up with one loss at the end of the year, it's still hard to imagine not seeing a rematch of Alabama and LSU in the National Championship.
