Jacksonville vs. Cleveland: 8 Things We Learned from the Jaguars 14-10 Loss

David LevinNov 20, 2011

This was supposed to be the start of something big for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Playing against a team that supposedly could not score touchdowns, the Cleveland Browns were the great cure this team needed to win two games in a row; make that two road games in a row.

It wasn't meant to be. The Jaguars lost momentum again.

With a chance to win the game in the final seconds, Blaine Gabbert could not hit his receivers on two chances in eight seconds as Jacksonville fell 14-10 in Cleveland.

The game, a defensive struggle for most of the contest, said more about the Jaguars trying to allow a rookie to win a game for a 3-6 team when their best player, Maurice Jones-Drew, was a viable option on the game's last play.

Cleveland and its running game—led by Chris Ogbonnaya, who gained 115 yards on the day—picked and picked at the Jaguars defense all day long.

Now, the Jaguars bring their team home, having split their last four games and face division rival Houston.

Here is what we learned from today's game.

8. Neither Team Is an Offensive Juggernaut

1 of 8

Both Cleveland and Jacksonville have a lot to learn about scoring in the NFL.

But Jacksonville's issues were compounded by the fact the offense could not move in the first half.

Blaine Gabbert showed again he was aiming at his receivers' feet in the passing game, and passes were still being thrown behind receivers who were in the right route but could not catch the ball on the fly.

7. Jaguars Had Trouble Stopping the Run

2 of 8

Chris Ogbonnaya had a great game against a run defense that was supposed to be stout.

The Jaguars gave up a long run to the third-string running back late in the game, which proved to be huge in securing the win.

6. Marcedes Lewis Got Back in the Passing Game

3 of 8

For the first time this season, it looked like Lewis was a main target early and often in Blaine Gabbert's passing game.

While the first few passes were at his toes, Gabbert was able to hit Lewis in stride and higher on his body to secure passes.

Maybe that is a sign the All-Pro tight end will be getting more passes thrown his way from now on.

He had seven catches on the day.

5. Dawan Landry Gets an Interception

4 of 8

Landry, another one of Jacksonville's free agent signings, had an interception of quarterback Colt McCoy.

Landry and the secondary played well, not giving up huge plays on defense.

McCoy completed 19 of 24 passes for 199 yards with a touchdown and one interception.

4. Terrance Knighton's Loss Was Felt

5 of 8

The huge defensive tackle for the Jaguars did not play in his second game in a row.

Knighton, nicknamed "Pot Roast," could have given the team a much-needed plug in the middle of the defensive line. C.J. Mosely started in his place this week.

Whether Knighton will be active to play next week at home against Houston has not been determined yet.

3. Maurice Jones-Drew Runs for a Touchdown

6 of 8

The offense was poking and plotting and moving at a slow speed in the first half, but Maurice Jones-Drew was still the focal point of the offense.

He helped the offense by scoring the team's only touchdown of the game.

Jones-Drew continued to show why he was one of the best runners this year in the NFL by running for 87 yards and a touchdown.

2. Blaine Gabbert Has a Better Game, but Little Results

7 of 8

When your quarterback throws 41 times in a game, you hope for better results.

If you take a positive away from this game, Gabbert threw for 210 yards in the game but barely completed 50 percent of his passes.

Hoepfully, the fact he was more in control of the offense is a good sign.

1. The Jaguars Come Home to Face the Texans

8 of 8

Now comes the challenge of coming off a loss and facing the division-leading Houston Texans.

Houston had a bye week this week and should be without starting quarterback Matt Schaub. If that is the case, then Matt Leinart would get the start.

The Jaguars had issues stopping both Ben Tate and Arian Foster in the 24-14 loss to the Texans three weeks ago.
