UFC 139 Results: Alex Soto's Debut Will Be One to Forget
UFC 139 will be a memorable one for most people involved, but there is one person that won’t remember it in a good way, unless you count the experience.
Alex Soto will remember Saturday night for a much different reason after he loses to Michael McDonald on Saturday night in his UFC debut.
Soto (6-0-1 in MMA) is replacing Johnny Eduardo (25-9, 0-1 UFC) because of a shoulder injury. McDonald (13-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) will provide a very tough opponent in his debut.
This match is an intriguing one. You don’t really know what to expect with Soto and we know a little more about McDonald, but not much other than he is the youngest UFC fighter with loads of skill.
He also has the experience in the octagon and in MMA fights. That has to count for something.
Soto has been on a whirlwind in his career before the UFC. Things haven’t been squeaky-clean for the guy.
"I was going to school full-time and working full-time," Soto said. "I just kind of wasn't happy where I was going, so I just decided to follow this itch that I had to become an MMA fighter, and I've been following it ever since."
He followed his “itch” and boy is it paying off.
How did Soto figure out he was good enough if he didn’t start early in his life?
"I showed up, and it turned out that nobody had gloves, so it was going to be a bare-knuckle fight," Soto said. "We were originally going to use shin pads, but not everybody had shin pads. I was like, 'Oh, my God.' But I was like, there's only one way to find out if I got this or not, right?"
It turns out that Soto is pretty good at what he does.
It should be a great fight. We will learn much more about both competitors, but fans of the UFC will remember Soto as the guy who lost to McDonald at UFC 139. This match can be seen on Spike TV in the preliminary contests.
