BCS Rankings Chaos: Why LSU-Bama Rematch Would Be Great—To Get Rid of BCS
The detractors of the BCS have long been vocal, but they are better heard (and they exist in greater numbers) in seasons when the system seems to fail. With that outcome now becoming not only possible but likely, the opponents of the BCS are starting to roar.
While their primary complaint seems to be against an LSU Tigers-Alabama Crimson Tide rematch, they really should be wishing for that outcome. It could be a major help in garnering massive public support against the current championship system in college football.
The most outraged the general public has been against the BCS was in 2007, when the college football world descended into madness the likes of which we had never seen. As some of you will remember, the LSU Tigers and Ohio State Buckeyes came into the final weekend ranked No. 5 and No. 3, respectively, and yet ended up playing each other in the BCS Championship Game.
The final BCS Standings that year were comprised of six teams with two losses each in the top seven. This year is starting to look like another 2007.
No One Wants a Rematch
Most college football fans (outside of Ann Arbor) were relieved in 2006 when the Florida Gators snuck ahead of the Michigan Wolverines in the final BCS Standings, avoiding a disastrous championship rematch of two teams who had just played in the season finale.
The BCS was formed to create a real national championship game, but part of the appeal of that championship game was to pit teams who rarely meet against each other. If the Ohio State Buckeyes went undefeated, they wouldn't just play the 9-2 Pac-10 Champion (as they would have in the previous 40 years), they would be matched against the also undefeated Miami Hurricanes.
The BCS Championship Game loses its appeal if there's a rematch and it really loses its appeal if its a rematch of two teams from the same conference.
"Z...Z...Z..."
The so-called "Game of the Century" two weeks ago turned out to be just the opposite. Despite being a close game from start to finish, the matchup between LSU and Alabama provided fewer highlights than the annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.
I'm as avid a college football fan that exists in this country and I'm not even sure I'd have an ounce of excitement for a rematch of those two teams. I don't think anyone outside the Bible Belt wants to see LSU and Alabama grind out "three yards and a cloud of dust" for 60 more minutes. We could hardly stay awake for the first 60.
In all honesty, I think an LSU-Alabama rematch would significantly hinder the BCS and fuel the argument against it. We play the entire season for one championship game at the end of it. We deserve better than a rematch of a game that yielded no touchdowns the first time around.
