UFC 139 Fight Card: 7 Reasons to Be Excited for This Event

Matt SaccaroNov 19, 2011

There are several reasons to be excited for UFC 139, despite the fact that no title is being defended.

As with any event, there are upsides and downsides to the matches on the fight card. For UFC 139, the good outweighs the bad.

So why should you be watching UFC 139 tonight? And why should you be on the edge of your seat when the fight card is starting? Read and find out!

See the Future of Middleweight in Action

1 of 7

Long Island native Chris Weidman will be fighting Tom Lawlor in the last of the Facebook preliminaries.

Weidman is an accomplished collegiate wrestler as well as a highly skilled grappler, having participated in the prestigious ADCC submission grappling tournament.

He has dispatched two tough fighters in Alessio Sakara and Jesse Bongfeldt with relative ease. This fact, as well as his impressive credentials and his training camp (the Serra-Longo fight team) have given rise to a lot of talk about Weidman becoming the future middleweight champion.

Is the talk true?

Possibly. But one thing that can't be denied is that Weidman will be a staple at middlweight for quite some time.

He will always be a contender and may well be champion one day.

Can Ryan Bader Put His Career Back Together?

2 of 7

At one time, people were talking about Jon Jones and Ryan Bader as if they were on the same talent level.

Bader was quickly dispatched by Jones and was given an "easy" fight against Tito Ortiz. Unfortunately for Bader, the fight was only easy for the "Huntington Beach Bad Boy." Bader was choked out in the first round.

That's two straight losses for Bader; a third usually means walking papers. If he loses to Jason Brilz in San Jose, his time with the company will likely be up.

Thus, one reason to be excited for the UFC 139 fight card is seeing whether or not Bader can put his fighting career back together or if he loses a third straight.

Stephan Bonnar Returning to Action

3 of 7

Stephan Bonnar is a fan-favorite and a pretty entertaining fighter.

He returns to action at UFC 139 against Kyle Kingsbury, after a layoff of nearly a year due to injury.

Bonnar usually doesn't disappoint in terms of putting on a show, so seeing him on the main card is definitely something to be excited about.

One Welterweight Will Return to Being a Contender, One Won't

4 of 7

At one time, if you said Martin Kampmann was going to be fighting Rick Story, people would think it was a title eliminator.

Unfortunately for both men, their recent outings have ended in failure.

Kampmann is on a two-fight losing streak and Story—once considered to be a top guy in the division—was upset by the unlikely Charlie Brenneman.

This fight will be fun to watch because of it's implications. One man will become a contender again, one will be sent back down to the bottom of the ladder (and may even be kicked out of the UFC, in Kampann's case).

We Will Find out It Urijah Faber Is Overrated

5 of 7

Former WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber is easily the most recognized and popular fighter to have ever fought in the lighter weight classes (featherweight and bantamweight).

As such, it's possible that he's been overrated due to his popularity.

Critics say he lost to an average fighter in Mike Brown and couldn't even come close to beating a good fighter in Jose Aldo and Dominick Cruz.

How Faber performs against Brian Bowles will determine the truth. Was/is he overrated, or not?

Wanderlei Silva vs. Cung Le

6 of 7

Wanderlei Silva hasn't been in a boring fight (at least recently) and neither has Cung Le.

They are both exciting strikers who give their all in each and every fight.

Whether this fight goes 15 seconds or the full 15 minutes, it'll be fun to watch.

See One of the Last Great Pride Matches

7 of 7

The superstars from Japan's Pride fighting championships are getting older, they won't be around for much longer.

Dan Henderson and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua are two such legends and they will be main eventing the UFC 139 fight card.

Any fan of MMA should be excited to finally see those two fight as well as see one of the last great fights that two Pride fighters have to offer.
