WWE Survivor Series 2011 Matches: Why Mark Henry Must Defeat Big Show Cleanly

Mike ChiariNov 20, 2011

Since winning the World Heavyweight Championship from Randy Orton at Night of Champions in September, "The World's Strongest Man" Mark Henry has been on a major roll. No heel has been built up better than he has over the past several months.

Despite that, the WWE is in real danger of wasting a good thing. Since returning from an injury suffered at the hands of Henry, the Big Show has been made to look like Henry's equal, and even his superior at times.

While there may not be any shame in being on equal footing with a monster like the Big Show, he is ultimately a washed-up competitor whose time has passed. While Big Show can still be a believable main-event filler for short periods of time, he is not a long-term solution.

Henry was able to retain against Big Show at Vengeance, but it was due to a no-contest in which the ring collapsed thanks to a superplex of Big Show from Henry. That particular spot and match was successful in extending the feud without making anyone look weak.

At the same time, Henry has been so successful recently because he has essentially been booked as a no-nonsense, unstoppable mammoth that destroys everything in his path. Big Show has provided some resistance, and if Henry comes away victorious at Survivor Series, then it will have all been worth it.

Although it would be senseless, there is always the chance that the creative team decides to put the title on Big Show. He is over with the crowd to be sure, but he has already been to the top of mountain and he definitely doesn't need to be there again.

Henry has waited 15 years for his moment, and now that he has it, he is thriving in that role. Henry has never been an interesting figure, but his character development has been excellent and he most certainly deserves more time with the strap.

WrestleMania is quite a while into the future at this point, but I am beginning to think more and more that it would be best to let Henry hold the title until then. His recent run-ins with Money in the Bank winner Daniel Bryan has me very interested in what they could do together.

The way I see it, if Henry continues to be booked the way he has and continues to mow through the competition, then Bryan can make good on his promise of waiting until WrestleMania to cash in his title shot.

Bryan would enter the match as the overwhelming underdog, but he would find a way to come out on top and would have a true WrestleMania moment. For that to happen, though, Henry absolutely has to hold the title until April 1, uninterrupted.

That isn't to say that I'm anticipating the day that Henry finally drops the title, but I feel like it would be the perfect culmination for both Henry and Bryan. Until that time, I will very much enjoy Henry's title reign because it will hopefully last well into the future.

Beating the Big Show at Survivor Series is the first step, and in order for Henry to remain credible, he has to win cleanly without any outside help whatsoever. You never know, but I do believe that the creative team will make the right decision in this instance.
