DeMarco Murray vs. Felix Jones: There's Really No Debate for the Dallas Cowboys

Matt LechnerNov 17, 2011

The Dallas Cowboys will get running back Felix Jones back this week for their game with the Washington Redskins. Jones has been sidelined for the last four games with a high ankle sprain. While he's been out, the Cowboys may have found their running back of the future and present.

Rookie DeMarco Murray has been extremely effective in relief of Jones, rushing for 601 yards in the last four games. Murray's rise to relevance started in Week 7 when he rattled off a ridiculous 253 yards rushing, including a 91-yard touchdown, against the St. Louis Rams.

Murray's 253 yards in that one game was good enough to make him the Cowboys' all-time single-game rushing leader, outperforming Emmitt Smith and Tony Dorsett.

With Jones coming back, it's not clear what role each player will have on the Cowboys. If Dallas is smart, they'll keep feeding the ball to Murray, and Jones will move to third-down back.

If you need more evidence that Murray should be the lead back, look no further than the first five games of the season. During that time, Jones rushed for just 255 yards and one touchdown. Murray nearly eclipsed that offensive output in his first game as a starter.

Murray has also broken a Cowboys records held by Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith with his 466 rushing yards over a three-game span. That was the most rushing yards by any Cowboys player since Smith ran for 446 yards in 1993, which was his MVP season.

The Cowboys are 3-1 in their four games with Murray as lead back, and if they want to continue having success, they should find a way to get him the ball at least 20 times a game.
