Should the Miami Dolphins Re-Sign Chad Henne?

Mario CuadrosNov 17, 2011

This is a question that will probably be in many people's minds come March of next year. Chad Henne has been with the Miami Dolphins since he was drafted out of Michigan in the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft. He has had more negatives than positives and has frustrated, and at times infuriated, 'Fins fans for the last couple of seasons.

Henne showed signs of significant improvement during the start of this season but unfortunately, his season was cut short due to a shoulder injury. So the question everyone will be asking is if the Dolphins should re-sign Chad Henne and give him another shot when they will probably be picking a quarterback early in the upcoming draft.

The answer is no.

Miami has looked good with Matt Moore these last couple of weeks, and he has the Dolphins looking for their third straight victory on Sunday against the Buffalo Bills. Moore signed a two-year contract this offseason, and if Miami is looking for a backup for next year, it should most definitely be him.

Matt Moore has proven that he is more than capable of leading this offense and has looked better than Henne did at the start of the season. The offense has played a lot better with him and has scored 31 and 20 points in the last two games. Henne's best scoring outing this season was 24 points in the first game of the season against the New England Patriots. I don't know if Matt Moore's improved play has helped Reggie Bush be as productive as he has been, but when Henne was calling the shots, Bush was practically invisible.

Reggie Bush is not the only one who has benefited from Matt Moore's improved play these last few weeks. Brandon Marshall has come back to life. In the last two games, Marshall has caught 15 passes for 204 yards and a touchdown. More importantly, he seems to be smiling a lot more than he did when Henne was throwing him the ball, and playing like the receiver everyone knows he can be. It appears that Marshall and Moore have built a strong quarterback-to-wide receiver connection which Dolphins fans have not seen since Dan Marino was throwing passes to the "Marks Brothers" in the 1980s and the early 1990s.

Why bring Henne back and send Marshall into obscurity once again?

Matt Moore has proven that even though he has had some ill-advised throws that have resulted in interceptions, he can manage the game and make better decisions than Chad Henne. Moore also airs it out more often than "Checkdown Chad" which makes it possible for the explosive offense that Dolphins fans, along with owner Stephen Ross, want to see.

Moore has also brought back to life the tight end position. Anthony Fasano has scored two touchdowns in his last three games and is a big reason why Miami has looked solid on offense in their last two games.

It is not a mystery that the Dolphins need to draft a quarterback in the first round this year. They have avoided drafting a quarterback this early since 1983 when some guy out of the University of Pittsburgh was taken with the 27th pick. I think he turned out alright. With a rookie like Matt Barkley, Landry Jones or Robert Griffin III possibly joining the organization next year, the Dolphins will need a mentor who can provide the rookie with positive advice (unlike Brett Favre). Maybe the organization wants him to sit out his first year and learn from Moore (not that there's a lot to learn from him) before he's thrown into the fire. Matt Moore would be a much better mentor than Chad Henne and would get the rookie quarterback on the right track for the following year.

The Dolphins, as well as Chad Henne, need a fresh start and not re-signing him will mark the beginning of a new era in Miami.
