WWE Survivor Series 2011: Why John Cena's Father Will Cause Heel Turn

Nathan GieseNov 15, 2011

Last night on Raw, Mick Foley made a rare appearance and tried to conduct another episode of "This is Your Life." This time, his target was John Cena.

It was a fitting moment to start off with, considering that Raw was being held in Cena's hometown of Boston, and the last time TIYL was conducted was on Foley's former tag-team partner, and Cena's partner for Survivor Series, The Rock.

This, however, was somewhat of a failure from jump street. An initially nice thought produced one of the most awkward moments in recent memory for Cena, as he was forced to face his former little league baseball coach, and former running mate during his rapper gimmick, Bull Buchanan.

Cena's former coach came out and told the story of how John struck out to end the game with the winning run just a base hit away, and Buchanan spoke of how John ruined his life by separating from him and becoming successful, while Bull would end up divorced and broke.

All appeared lost in a segment that had so much promise. That is, until John Cena Sr. made an appearance.

Rather than telling a heartwarming story from Junior's childhood, Senior directed his message to the fans who boo his son.

John Cena Sr. said that the deep-voiced males only booed his son to be cool, citing they didn't want to cheer along with the young children that adored Cena the wrestler.

Cena Sr. would go on about that for a few minutes, continuing to embarrass his son in the process. John, the wrestler, would abruptly stop his father from going any further and usher him out of the ring.

John would go on to say that he didn't need fan's approval, that all he had in his life was the ring and his belief in himself, and that he didn't worry about what other people thought about him.

On the surface, it was another Cena promo about rising above the hate and being who he wants to be rather than who others want to see him be.

Except, boiling under the surface, there is an untold story of Cena that is waiting to come out and be shared with the rest of the world.

When dissecting exactly what Cena said last night, there appears to be something within Cena that he has yet to allow the rest of the world to see.

It's well known that fans of The Rock are going to boo Cena no matter what because of their feud. After all, fans need to decide who to cheer for, right?

Well, it's only a matter of time until Cena decides he's had enough of being the nice guy in the whole story.

Cena's father may have spoken the words that he doesn't have the stones to say himself.

How can fans suddenly decide to boo a guy that works as hard as Cena does? How can they go from loving Cena one day, to hating him the next?

Better yet, how can fans universally decide to boo Cena as soon as The Rock comes around? Fans have decided to cheer a man who walked out on the company seven years ago, and the second he comes back, however often it is, immediately love him as if he never left. On the other hand, Cena has never gone away from the WWE and its fans just because something else seems more lucrative.

This is not me, a fan, talking. This is what Cena has to be thinking these days. Cena continues to try to gain fan's respect by calling out Rocky for his satellite appearances on the show while he shows up each and every week, but to no avail. In fact, each week, it appears more and more that fans have continued to hate Cena.

At Survivor Series, it's a forgone conclusion that either Rock or Cena will turn on the other at some point. Don't be surprised to see Cena being the one that turns his back, possibly even before the match has been concluded.

It may not be the heel turn we've all been waiting for, but it's the closest possible thing we will get. Cena will finally realize that he truly doesn't care what other people think of him, especially if the fans are being hypocritical about the situation he is currently in.

Cena's father asked the fans why they boo his son. On Sunday, his son will no longer be asking, nor will he be trying to win them over. After Survivor Series, expect an edgier, possibly thug-like character for John Cena.

Not a complete heel turn, but close enough.
