Kansas City Chiefs Report Card Week 10: Grading Each Unit vs Broncos
If the Kansas City Chiefs won this football game, they would have been in first place in the AFC West. Instead, they lost and are last place in the AFC West.
It did not look like the Chiefs wanted to win this game. It was a very poor performance constructed by the team from start to finish.
The Chiefs lost to the Broncos, 17-10. The score does not indicate that this was a blowout or a one-sided contest. However, it felt like the Broncos were able to do everything to make sure the Chiefs never took the lead in this game.
The Chiefs have lost their last two games at Arrowhead Stadium in a humiliating manner. This time, they lost to a team from their own division.
It is time to hand out grades for each unit for Week 10. Let me know what you think.
Offense
1 of 5What was the difference between the offense this week and last week? Nothing, other than the fact that the Chiefs scored one touchdown this week.
Matt Cassel did not receive any help from his offensive line and was sacked four times.
Cassel had no reliable receivers, as Dwayne Bowe and Jonathan Baldwin dropped a few passes in this game.
The Chiefs had some bright spots on the ground, but it was too little, too late, as the Broncos had a lead at that point.
The Chiefs offense has not done anything to lately, and it won't be pretty when they carry that over against the Patriots on the road for Monday Night Football.
Cassel left Arrowhead Stadium with a cast, and his status for the game against New England is up in the air.
Overall grade: F
Defense
2 of 5The Chiefs defense was lucky that they only gave up 17 points.
The Broncos ran the ball 55 times and passed only eight times in this game.
Even with the loss of Willis McGahee and Knowshon Moreno to injury, the Broncos had no problems running the football, coming away with 244 rushing yards at Arrowhead Stadium.
Tim Tebow may not be a good quarterback, but that doesn't matter. Tebow is doing whatever it takes to win. He came through only when he needed to. He completed only two passes in this entire game. Tebow's second pass was a touchdown play to Eric Decker, who was wide open, for 56 yards to pin the final nail on the coffin.
The Chiefs defense continues to show us that they cannot tackle. Their next six games are against teams who own a winning record. This defense has a long six weeks ahead of them.
Overall grade: D
Special Teams
3 of 5If your last name is Colquitt, you probably had a good day at Arrowhead Stadium.
Dustin Colquitt and his brother, Britton, went head-to-head on Sunday. Colquitt punted the ball seven times for 339 yards. His longest punt went for 67 yards as he tried to keep the Broncos away from the Chiefs side of the field.
Had Colquitt not done that, the Broncos would have scored more than 17 points in this game.
Ryan Succop also hit a field goal to help make it a one-touchdown game with less than 10 seconds to go. Succop hit a good onside kick, but the Chiefs could not recover after there was a dog pile for the football.
The Chiefs continue to struggle in the return game. Javier Arenas played in this game after missing last week's match with an injury. Arenas averaged 17.7 yards on kick returns and 9.7 yards on punt returns.
Overall grade: C
Coaching
4 of 5It is clear that Todd Haley and his coaching staff did not study the Broncos, nor did they do enough to prepare their team for this game.
In the first quarter, the Broncos lined up with five wide receivers on 2nd-and-goal from seven yards out. Tebow, with ease, was able to run to the end zone to help the Broncos score the first touchdown of the game.
It makes me wonder if the Chiefs watched any game film on the Broncos. You could watch highlights on ESPN and still see that coming when they line up with a five-wide set.
Losing for the second straight week at home is not acceptable. Had it not been for that great play-action call that resulted in a touchdown to Le'Ron McClain, the Chiefs would have received an F.
This coaching staff still has a lot of work to do. With Haley slowly moving back to the hot seat, how much time does he have left?
Overall grade: D-
Chiefs Fans
5 of 5Someone has to receive a good grade.
Chiefs fans are obviously labeled as one of the best in the NFL.
Today, the Chiefs were one of six teams to thank the men and women who serve this country and who have sacrificed their lives for this great nation.
Chiefs fans held up cards during the first quarter showing their appreciation to the veterans. The sign formed the colors of the United States with a message saying "THANK YOU VETERANS."
These fans also deserve a lot of love for paying at least $27 for parking and making it all the way to see their team lose like this.
Overall grade: A+
