UFC on FOX Results: 5 Things Dos Santos Needs To Do To Defeat Lesnar
UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos doesn't have much time to rest on his laurels since he will be facing the winner of Brock Lesnar vs. Alistair Overeem.
Both Lesnar and Overeem are skilled fighters who posses different sets of challenges to dos Santos.
So what would happen if Lesnar pulled off the upset and was fated to meet dos Santos in the Octagon? What would dos Santos have to do in order to defeat the behemoth Lesnar?
Read and find out!
Sprawl
1 of 5When fighting Brock Lesnar, a takedown attempt is imminent.
Dos Santos would need to get his sprawling abilities perfected before going into a fight with Lesnar, since the longer the fight stays on the feet, the more it favors the Brazilian.
Train with Large, American Wrestlers
2 of 5What's the best way to get used to the stifling tenacity and strength of a big, strong, American wrestler? Train with big, strong, American wrestlers.
Dos Santos' training partners in both striking and Brazilian jiu-jitsu are second to none, but he needs high-level wrestlers as partners in order to guarantee that Lesnar's takedown attempts will fail.
Dos Santos' takedown defense and ability to stymie wrestlers has looked excellent so far, but that doesn't mean he can afford to lag behind in this area. Training with better wrestlers will help him against any opponent, not just Lesnar.
Hit Lesnar Hard and Often
3 of 5Brock Lesnar doesn't respond well to being hit in the face repeatedly, as proven by his fight with Cain Velasquez.
While it sounds obvious, the smartest thing dos Santos can do is unload punches to Lesnar's face, not giving him time to set up a shot and forcing him to cover up for dear life.
Pace Himself
4 of 5Shane Carwin lost to Brock Lesnar because he didn't pace himself. When Carwin hurt Lesnar, he kept swarming the beleaguered former pro-wrestler until he exhausted all his energy, allowing Lesnar to come back and win the fight.
Dos Santos has to know to pace himself when he is in that situation. If he gets Lesnar hurt, he can't go wild. If he stays calm he'll eventually finish him off the way Cain Velasquez did.
Don't Get Overconfident
5 of 5After a loss that saw him essentially pirouetting to get away from Cain Velasquez, Brock Lesnar became the butt of many jokes in the MMA community.
Since that loss, many have chided Lesnar as an overrated bum with no skills who runs in the opposite direction when he gets hit.
While Lesnar may not be comfortable in the striking department yet, the sentiment that he's naught but a can is a gross exaggeration.
Any opponent in the UFC has to be taken seriously. If dos Santos isn't prepared to win against Lesnar, he will lose.
