WWE WrestleMania XXIX: 3 Big Reasons It Should Take Place in Chicago
Last month, DX made a special, one-night-only appearance in Texas and teased that WrestleMania XXIX could be taking place in Dallas.
I looked through WWE's corporate website and did not find anything about this being set in stone, so I figured I would offer up an alternative to Dallas.
While I understand WWE's desire to hold an event in the world's largest domed stadium, I think I have a better idea for a venue. Chicago is the city that I think should take on WrestleMania XXIX.
Previously, WWE has held three WrestleManias from the Windy City: WrestleMania 2, 13 and 22.
Chicago is a great city for sports, as we are the home to both the Cubs and White Sox as well as the Blackhawks, Bulls and a few soccer teams.
I have lived near Chicago my whole life and I love what the city has to offer in terms of sports. I was fortunate enough to be born a few years before the Bears won their SuperBowl in 1985.
I have been able to see a Stanley Cup win for the Blackhawks, a World Series win for the White Sox and six championships for Michael Jordan and the Bulls in the '90s.
The Cubs have not won a World Series in my lifetime, but going to their games is like a totally different experience than any other sporting event. The crowds go nuts and you rarely see a team with such a long record of losing have sellout crowds, that's how beloved the Cubs are in Chicago.
In this slideshow I will list the three big reasons why Chicago is the ideal city for WWE to hold WrestleMania XXIX.
Soldier Field
1 of 3Anyone who has ever attended any event at Soldier Field can tell you that it is a great stadium to see any kind of live show.
Up until now, WWE has had all of it's Chicago-based WrestleManias in the smaller venues; it's time to upgrade to Chicago's most beloved stadium.
From concerts to conventions, Soldier Field is ideal for any kind of event that will draw a large crowd. The stadium itself is a legend in the city of Chicago, as it is home to the beloved Chicago Bears.
I have been to a few events at Soldier Field that were not Bears games and I can tell you that it is the ideal stadium for anything live.
The crowds get into quite a bit of a frenzy and it creates a great atmosphere for sporting events, concerts and other things like wrestling shows.
With the stadium's usual capacity being somewhere around 64,000, I would imagine they could add a few thousand more fans by putting more seats where the field would be, so their total attendance might be close to 70,000, which would be a good number for WrestleMania.
Check out this video I found that goes over Soldier Field in 60 seconds in a very interesting way.
Track Record
2 of 3WWE has a record of putting on great shows in Chicago. Let's take a look at the previous WrestleMania events that have taken place there.
WrestleMania 2 was held at three different venues across the country, with each location sharing a third of the action while broadcasting to the other locations.
The best part of the Chicago portion was a 20-man battle royal featuring NFL players and WWE wrestlers. This included NFL legend William "The Fridge" Perry.
The match was won by Andre The Giant after last eliminating Bret Hart. This was easily the most popular match of the night outside of the main event due to the participation of NFL players.
WrestleMania 13 took place in Chicago as well. That night featured matches with many WWE legends.
The main draws of the night were Bret Hart vs Stone Cold in a submission match and Owen Hart and The British Bulldog facing Vader and Mankind.
The main event was Psycho Sid facing Undertaker for the WWF title. Other notable appearances included Triple H, The Rock, Legion of Doom and Bob Backlund.
WrestleMania 22 was held in the Windy City as well and did not fail to impress. That night would see many memorable matches take place.
RVD won his Money in the Bank match at the event, Shawn Michaels beat Vince McMahon and The Undertaker put away yet another opponent in Mark Henry.
The main event of the evening saw Triple H and John Cena face off over the WWE title.
Overall, each event was very well received, giving Chicago a great track record for putting on a great show at a great venue.
This past year we witnessed another great show in Chicago with Money in the Bank. We all remember what happened during that crazy night, and it probably would not have had such an insane response had CM Punk not been in his home town of Chicago.
CM Punk
3 of 3One of Chicago's hometown heroes is none other than WWE's pipe bomb-dropping CM Punk.
Punk is very popular in Chicago due to being from there originally, but it is also where one of the most memorable events in his career took place.
Money in the Bank this year featured a match which saw CM Punk leave the WWE as champion after defeating John Cena. It was a very good move for WWE because it created so much buzz about whether or not CM Punk was ever coming back to WWE.
This was a huge angle in WWE and brought out more interest from fans than they had shown in years. Punk was talked about in ways he had never seen before and it all happened right down the street from where he lives.
CM Punk is one of WWE's hottest commodities right now and I doubt that will change by WrestleMania 29. If he is still on top of the WWE universe at that point, then having him main event WrestleMania in his hometown would make for a great night.
Punk has been a parade ambassador in Chicago and has legions of Twitter followers that know of his love for Chi Town.
WWE likes to play up hometown heroes so much that they will go out of their way to have a heel play the face role for one night only just to get a good reaction.
Two years ago, WWE went to England for Raw. William Regal was the GM at the time and he was portraying a heel character.
When they did Raw, they had him face off against a heel (Orton) to get him over as the baby face for one night, and it worked because he got an even bigger reaction than he would have had he remained a heel for that night.
CM Punk is someone who has a very long career ahead of him as long as he stays healthy and doesn't suffer any major injuries.
Bringing the Windy City Warrior (I am lobbying for Punk to get that nickname) to WrestleMania in his hometown would be a great move for WWE.
What do you think, would Chicago be a good place for WrestleMania XXIX?
